"NMAT 2020 - Best of three scores to be taken,” - Bina Sharma, Director, Product Management, GMAC
NMAT by GMAC is one of the popular MBA entrance exams whose score is accepted by 39 management colleges in India. This year amidst pandemic, NMAT 2020 is being conducted in two modes, that is, as a home proctored test as well as the computer based test that can be taken at the NMAT test centre. The exam has already started on November 04, 2020 and the NMAT test window is open till January 30, 2021. To resolve candidates’ queries, Careers360 spoke to Bina Sharma, Director of Product Management, Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). In this exclusive interview, she speaks about the AI enabled NMAT home proctored test, the benefits of three attempts in NMAT by GMAC, steps to take in case the system shuts down in between the test, system requirements and much more.
Careers360: This year, there are two modes of exam: a home proctored one and a computer-based test that can be taken at an exam centre. Considering that dates are spanning an 88 window, will the exam centres be available on all days?
Bina Sharma: The capacity to accommodate students is available across test centres/online on all dates within this window and candidates can book as per their convenience from the dates shown as available.
Careers360: If not, what are the conditions and modalities for the same? In case an exam centre is not available on a particular date, how will a student get to know this?
Bina Sharma: All available seats across dates will be visible to candidates when they login to schedule their exam. So they can choose as per their convenience.
Careers360: How secure is the home proctored test and how can one compare it with the CBT? What precautions is GMAC taking in this respect?
Bina Sharma: We have taken all precautions and have communicated all the rules to candidates on email and on the website. Further on, all the exams are AI enabled and proctor has the right to pause and do a 360 scan at any time, terminate the exam if required. The entire exam is recorded and reviewed and GMAC reserves the right to revoke/withhold the scores if any suspicious activity is flagged during the online proctored exam.
Careers360: What are the benefits of three attempts? Will the better of the three scores be considered? How should a student go about the second and third attempt? Do they need to reapply or simply make the payment of the exam fee and book their exam slot?
Bina Sharma: The benefit of three attempts is it enables the candidate's best performance. Candidates can assess his/her performance and apply for retake. Best score is considered by schools. They do not need to fill the form again , they have to pay for retake and book their slot.
Careers360: What is the qualifying score? Does the scorecard mention whether a student has qualified or are only scores announced to be further processed by the colleges applied to?
Bina Sharma: The scorecard provides the scores and the schools decide on the admit criteria.
Careers360: Once a student qualifies, will GMAC send the scores to the participating colleges as well or is the student to take up the admission process as per his/her preference?
Bina Sharma: GMAC sends scores to schools selected by the Candidates. However ,candidates will have to complete the application process of the School as defined by them.
Careers360: What are the ID requirements on the day of the test?
Bina Sharma: Please refer to the link for ID requirements – https://www.nmat.org/id-requirements/. In case of any mismatch with the details you provided while filling up the application form and ID proofs you will not be allowed to sit for the exam.
Careers360: What are the system requirements and how can I check whether my system is compatible for online exams?

Questions related to NMAT by GMAC
I scored 233 in NMAT with 80 in LR, 85 in LS and 68 in QA. what are my chances of getting a call?
Since you have not mentioned the institute or college you are expecting to join, I am unable to give a specific answer . But on a general note, you have scored well in NMAT exam. Usually a score of 210-220+ is considered good enough to get good colleges. As far as the sectional cutoffs are concerned , for top institutes like NMIMS, the candidate should have 70-75+ in all 3 sections. So except for Quant section , considering your overall score , you will get call from almost all top colleges. In some top colleges, the quant sectional cutoff expected would be 70-75 though.,so it may affect your chances in those colleges alone, but mostly it will not be a big deal, so need not worry much. Below are the percentile requirements for various top colleges:
SDA Bocconi, Mumbai-70+
Alliance University, Bangalore-70
IBS (ICFAI B-schools), Hyderabad & 9 other cities-70
The selection of all NMAT participating colleges involves a similar pattern and it comprises of the following stages:
Group Discussion (GD)
Written Ability Test (WAT)
Personal Interview (PI)
Hence , prepare well for these rounds and hope for the best.

Based on your situation , it is not exactly predictable because it depends on what they chose to do. But there are chances you may get a call as you have applied for XIMB separately as well as has registered for the same in NMAT application. Regarding your NMAT option on the XIMB application, you may contact them once and address the situation and see whether it can be rectified.
