What is CAT Percentile?

CAT percentile is expressed as the total percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular candidate in the CAT exam. For example, if a candidate's CAT percentile is 99, it means that his performance was better than 99 percent of the total CAT candidates that year.

CAT percentile is a metric used by premier institutions like IIMs and other top B-schools in India to assess the relative performance of MBA aspirants who have appeared in the CAT exam. This percentile is important as MBA institutes use the list of candidates for further examination stages which include Written Ability Test (WAT) and Group Discussion/ Personal Interview (GD/PI) round.

How the CAT Percentile Calculated?

The CAT percentile is calculated by converting the raw score of each candidate who attended the exam to the same scale and standards. During the CAT normalisation process, the differences in the difficulty level of the exam in multiple slots will be eradicated. Try the below formula to calculate CAT percentile score:

IIM Admission Criteria and Selection Process

The admission and selection process for MBA/ PGP 2025-27 batch in IIM and other top B-schools will begin after the conclusion of CAT exam. The admission process involves several stages to ensure a comprehensive assessment of candidates.

  • WAT/GD: After the release of the IIM shortlist, the shortlisted candidates will be called for the written ability test or group discussion.
  • Personal Interview: The final stage of the selection process includes a Personal Interview (PI), which plays a vital role in determining a candidate's suitability for the program.
  • Final admission results: After completing the IIM selection process, the final IIM results will be announced. The final IIM result is released based on the composite score of the candidate. The composite score is calculated by considering parameters like previous academic performance, CAT exam score, work experience, performance in the GD and interview rounds, and gender diversity. Questions related to CAT

Hello Sahitya

For FMS Delhi, your percentile should be 99%+ and it should be 99.5%+ to be on the safer side.

Now coming to the academics:
1. 10th marks: 75%+ are given 10 out of 10
2. 12th marks: 75%+ are given 10 out of 10
3. Graduation marks: FMS doesn't considers graduation marks for screening.

So if you have 75%+ in both 10th and 12th, you will get full marks in academic score.

Hello Ayush

This is definitely a myth that with 0 work-ex you can't get IIM ABC because freshers still get into them although the competition is brutal but if you have good academics (9/9/9) and a good CAT (99.5%+), you have a chance.

These are some other good colleges except IIM ABC which you can aim for:

TIER 1:

  1. IIM Lucknow
  2. IIM Kozhikode
  3. IIM Indore
  4. IIM Shillong
  5. FMS Delhi
  6. SPJIMR Mumbai
  7. MDI Gurgaon
  8. IIFT Delhi & Kolkata

Tier 2:

  1. NMIMS Mumbai
  2. SIBM Pune
  3. SCMHRD Pune
  4. IMT Ghaziabad
  5. XIM Bhubaneshwar
  6. GIM Goa
  7. TISS Mumbai

Hello Aspirant,

With an AIR (All India Rank) of 1,60,000 in NEET and in the OC (Open Category) there is a very slim chance of getting an MBBS seat in a government medical college, especially in General Category seats through All India Quota (AIQ), but here are some options:

  1. MBBS in Private Colleges: You could get a seat in a private medical college through the state quota, especially in Tier 2/3 states where the cutoffs are relatively lower. The fee would be high compared to government colleges.
  2. BDS Seats: You have fair chances for BDS in both government & private dental colleges under the state quota.
  3. Deemed Universities: Some deemed universities may offer MBBS seats at this rank but the fee is exorbitantly high (15 to 25 lakhs/year).
  4. Management/NRI Quota: If you can afford, you can explore MBBS through management/NRI quota seats in private colleges.
  5. Alternatives: You can think of allied health science courses such as BAMS, BHMS, B.Sc Nursing etc., which also have good career scope.

You can also participate in state counselling rounds, as sometimes, seats remain vacant/unfilled, including mop-up rounds.

Hello Anshuman!!!
You have gotten 86% in 10th, which is a good score. 70% in graduation is not the best but decent. But the main problem is your 12th score which is 62%.

You would be already aware that the Top IIMs (BLACKI) give a big emphasis on your academic score. Let me tell you one example of IIM Ahmedabad,
According to a research i read a few days ago, in IIM Ahmedabad, 70.8% of students has 90+ percent in 12th, 25.8% has 80-90 percent and around 3.8% has less than 80% with the bracket of 60-69 having only 0.26% students of the total batch. Nearly same is the case of the other top IIMs like IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore.

Statistically, getting into these TOP IIMs is possible with 62% in 12th is possible (0.26% has done it) but practically you cannot get into these TOP IIMs unless you top the CAT exam.

See, I don't wish to dishearten or demotivate you but I wish to tell you the truth. Although the probability of you getting into these TOP IIMs is very less, but trying is better than doing nothing. You have a good score in 10th which will certainly help you. The least you could do is try your best.

My advice would be that you should not focus on these things like "Will I get top IIM" or negative talk like " I got low marks I won't qualify" etc. The main focus should be on your preparation. Give 100% in your preparation because that's the only thing in your hand. You can't change your 10th/12th/Graduation scores but you can put some more effort in your preparation which would certainly help to get better percentile.

Keep working hard and give your best. You might surprise yourself!!! And if not BLACKI, there are many other good colleges like FMS, MDI, newer IIMs etc.
