In this interview with Careers360, Dr. T.J Kamalanabhan, Professor and Head, Department of Management Studies, IIT Madras provides insights about the admission criteria for selecting students for the MBA programme.
He shares that the future managers at the Department of Management Studies- IIT Madras, are selected on the basis of their performance in Group Task and Personal Interview rounds. A Group Task is where each group is assigned a task to be accomplished collaboratively, and performance of each individual is evaluated. There lies the uniqueness in the admission criteria of DoMS, IIT Madras. Instead of Group Discussion or Essay Writing, the B-School looks for the candidates’ ability to act in a team. The B-School also assigns 15% weight-age on Work Experience and Gender.

Careers360: Is your B-School application open? What are the application criteria and the fee for MBA programme?
Dr. Kamalanabhan: The admissions opened on January 11, 2016. Candidates should possess a valid score in the Common Admissions Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. IIT Graduates who obtain a CGPA of 8 and above on 10 are exempted from CAT score. Their shortlisting will be based on a composite score with due weights to applicant’s CAT score, past academic performance, industry experience and gender.
Our regular intake is 77, and 10 sponsored students. The fee for MBA is 1.5 lakhs per semester.
Careers360: What is your selection criterion for MBA/PGDM programme for academic session 2016-18?
Dr. Kamalanabhan: Candidates from all categories shortlisted based on the composite score shall be called for a personal interview to a given location. The final selection for all categories will be based on the Performance in a group task, and personal interview. The Composite score obtained by the candidate.
We give weight-age to factors like,
CAT score weight-age – 85%
Academic Performance
Work Experience & Gender- 15%

Careers360: Many of the top B-schools have replaced GD with WAT. What is your take on this?
Dr. Kamalanabhan: We conduct Group Task & Personal Interview rounds for the shortlisted candidates. A Group Task is where each group is assigned a task to be accomplished collaboratively. We check how students perform, coordinate in as a team, and his strengths and weaknesses in a team.
Careers360: What are the factors that influence selection at the Personal Interview (PI) stage?
Dr. Kamalanabhan: Factors influencing student selection at Personal Interview are Attitude & Aptitude, Business and General Knowledge, Relevant work experience etc.

Dr. Kamalanabhan: Right in the heart of this metropolis is the sylvan campus of the IIT Madras. With 632 acres of wooded land, home to many endangered plants and animals and a beautiful lake, it is a welcome respite from the bustling city environment.

The eligibility criteria for regular students in Department of management studies, iit madras is as follows :-
1. The student must have a valid CAT 2019 scorecard.
2. The student must be a graduate in any discipline with atleast 60%. For SC / ST students there is a relaxation of 5%.
3. Final year students can also apply.
4. IIT graduate with minimum CGPA score for 8 out of 10 exempted from CAT score.

Application form for the above mentioned course was available from the very next dat after the CAT results were declared and was available till January 27, 2019 (Sunday).
if you have registered then WAT & Interview dates are in the month of March:
Mumbai: 16-18th March, 2019
Kolkata: 6-7th April, 2019
Madras: 23-25th March, 2019
Delhi: 20-23 February 2019

If i am not wrong then you must be asking about the Doms( Department of Management Studies) in IIT Madras.
IIT M has been one of the top institute in India. MBA was being offered in IIT Madras under Department of Humanities & Social science in form of M.Tech(Industrial Engineering) since 1959. MBA program commenced in IIT from 2001. Department of Management studies came into existence since 2004 and has been offering the course since then. ( Careers360).
Career360 has ranked DoMS IIT-M overall 5th for a consecutive second time, though the department never dwells upon the rankings too much.
Placements have been good with companies like Google, Amazon, Avalon consulting, StanChart, RBS, CTS etc being the major recruiters. The median CTC for 2016 placement was 12 lakh (source- DoMS IIT-M official website).
The Institute also provides an opportunity for international student exchange programs and summer/winter internship with top companies.
