i have 50% in 12th and i am a fresher am i eligible for xat and other exam???

Soumya Kanta Sarkar 26th Nov, 2019

YES. You are eligible to appear for XAT. Your class 12 percentage would not be considered as a barrier to that. According to XAT eligibility criteria, anybody is permitted to appear for the XAT if he/she holds a Bachelor degree with a minimum of 3 years duration or any other equivalent degree. You are also certainly eligible for other management exams like SNAP, TISS NET, MAT, CAT, ATMA, MICAT etc.

Now coming to the placement perspective. since MBA is preferred by the students mainly because of its hefty salary packages but getting a job is not easy. Since you are a fresher, you will have fairly good amount of shortlists in your Summer Internships and Final placements but your class 12 percentage may cause a problem to you since nowadays, companies are coming up with an eligibility criteria of 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12.

Now coming to the point that even if you do get shortlists, the interviewers are going to ask you a fairly good number of questions regarding your class 12 exam percentage. Be sure that you have a relevant and serious explanation to it since MBA is all about managing time and they will try to find reasons to reject your application. Companies nowadays are focusing on academic rigor because the every other organisations have their own specific training modules by which they can groom their employees but there are certain skills that you must have. One such skill is Time Management. O don’t come up with something that will show your poor time management skills or your capacity to do hard work.

Candidates who are fresher have a good chance of getting into a reputed company because the cost of skilling an employee is less than deskilling subsequent re skilling an experienced employee. Colleges now have a fair-mix students who are both experienced and fresher. They do their branding with placement figures so they would take a candidate who may have a chance of bringing in a good CTC.

  • For SNAP, the eligibility criteria is 50% marks or equivalent grade( 45% for SC,ST) in graduation. A candidate who has qualified from any foreign university must obtain an equivalence certificate from Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • For CAT, the eligibility criteria is 50%(for General and NC-OBC) or equivalent grade( 45% for SC,ST) in graduation. The university giving out the degree should be recognised by MHRD. Candidates who have completed their professional degree with atleast 50% marks are also eligible to appear for the exam.
  • For TISS NET, ‘Pass Class’ written in the Bachelor’s Degree of the candidate would be used for determining the eligibility. Candidates with a bridge course pattern or any other pattern with 15 years of formal education are also eligible to apply. But candidates who are in the final year of graduation and have not cleared all the courses in the first or second year are not eligible to apply. Candidates who have not cleared the final year exam of graduation successfully, is not eligible for the exam.
  • For MICAT, candidates  who have a Bachelor’s degree or have passed an equivalent examination which is recognised by Association of Indian Universities are eligible to appear for the exam. In addition to that, candidates (of MICAT 2020) must have appeared for at least one of the three exams that are CAT 2019, XAT 2020, GMAT 2018(onwards).

That being said, all the best for the exams for which you have been preparing for and give your best on the D-Day. Do not panic and solve as many mock papers as possible. Some would be speed based test and some will test your problem solving skills but the way you manage your time in the exam centre while you are solving the question paper will definitely decide your success.
