Trapezium and Area of Trapezium

Trapezium: A quadrilateral having one pair of opposite sides parallel is called a trapezium. In the figure, namely, AB and CD are parallel.

A special type of trapezium is the isosceles trapezium, where one pair of opposite sides is parallel, the other pair of sides is equal in length and the angles at the ends of each parallel side are equal.

An isosceles trapezium has one line of symmetry and its diagonals are equal in length.

Area of trapezium

The area of a trapezium is calculated with the following formula:

\text { Area }=\frac{1}{2} \times \text { Sum of parallel sides } \times \text { Distance between them. }

The parallel sides are called the bases of the trapezium. Let b1 and b2 be the lengths of these bases. The distance between the bases is called the height of the trapezium. Let h be this height. Then this formula becomes:
\text{Area}=\mathrm{\frac{1}{2}(b_1+b_2)h}
