Life is what you make it @ MDI Gurgaon
It is rather a true saying that our life is what we make it and this is especially true for the MDI Gurgaon students as 'life at MDI is what you make it'. Spread across 40 acres of lush green campus, MDI Gurgaon is among the top B-Schools in India and provides students liberty to enjoy, get social and do what it takes to have a great life. It is not only the academic pursuit that attracts students to this B-School.
With a compulsory residential programme and an equal mix of academics and leisure activities, life at MDI Gurgaon campus is a sure shot exhilarating sail of one’s educational career ship. The sheer size, leisure Institute equipped with facilities is what attracted us to take a look at the life at MDI Gurgaon.
Make life as you want it to be...
Make what you want from life seems to be the motto at MDI as life is not all about academics, rather the focus is equal on the non-academic activities too. After all, the future managers must be trained to handle all aspects of life with equal fervour.
Ashish Belwalker, student of MDI says, ‘‘Life at MDI is almost an equal mix of work and pleasure, and on the rare occasions when the balance is skewed, we make sure to turn it around.’’
Presentations, lectures, practices and all that hush-hush is the morning routine of the campus, but the actual life starts from the evening, as the sun goes down, students get much active at this time of the day.
As soon the lectures are over, the students are seen eating, running at the hostels, and the most important, playing their favorite sports.
No one sleeps at MDI, well not literally, but the action here never stops. The games like Table Tennis, Badminton, Basket Ball are the favourite sports of students here at MDI. After the classes, they either plan for their club activity, sit or gossip, play sport or just roam from wing to wing for completing assignments. And the best part is that the wardens are not strict about it at all. So unless you are literally giving any physical damages, you can go cracking upon almost everything!
The Compulsory Campus Lifeâ¦
Ah, don’t be afraid of ‘Compulsory’, that just an adjective we used but that word surely has significance in context to the campus life. The reason why we wrote Compulsory is because all the MBA Programmes are a Compulsory Residential programme, which in much simpler terms means, that if you want to study MBA at the MDI Campus, you have to reside in the campus only.
One of the students, Samarth Kagdial happily mentions, “Every student lives in the hostel and absolutely loves it. The hostel sees action 24x7 as no one sleeps in a b - school. Students can be seen scooting from one wing of the hostel to the other, trying to finish off assignments, case studies, preparing for quizzes etc.”
Our approach led us across the students who are staying at the campus, the residential programme is the best thing for them, they say. A high Adrenaline campus, MDI Gurgaon is the best thing that can happen to them and to the future students.
The Birthday Messâ¦
Birthdays are always exciting, a day when you want to come out in the centre and shout ‘Hey, it’s my birthday’, right. However, at MDI, that can turn into ‘Oh God save me, It’s my birthday!’ Not to worry, as there are no physical damages, but surely few holes in the pocket, as giving a birthday treat to around 300 people will surely burn your pocket.
“God help you if it is your birthday. Celebrating it with, and treating 300 people is not everybody’s idea of a “Happy” one”, Ashish said with a gloom.
This is because, it’s like a legacy, that whosoever’s birthday it is will give treat and that to those hundreds of unknown uninvited students. If it’s your birthday the whole hostel is automatically invited for your treat, or maybe in exchange of a soothing ‘pat on the back’ as a sign of sympathy.
The ‘Vellapanti’ Cornersâ¦
‘Sharma ji’, ‘Computer centre’, ‘Library’ are among the few hangouts of the campus. Sharma Ji is the name of the person who runs a cafeteria in the campus and is famous for his snacks.
The Computer center is generally a chaotic place as students rush here to get access to social networking sites, but more importantly they rush here to complete their assignments. Similar to this is the Library, where students who wish to study keep their calm and study hard. But its also a fun place as you get to discuss and share ideas not only with your classmates but with other programme students too.
Besides these generalized Hangout place, there is one special place which is secretive yet interesting. The first year Hostel building is so called a secretive place for which the route is only shared among the ‘Chosen few’. LOL, you surely have to be a Harry Potter- the chosen one to know the way.
But there is another way to actually find out, which is- Take admission and explore it yourself.
He's ‘Faffing’, That's a ‘Faff’, one more ‘Faff’
We interacted with three MDI students and asked them about the slangs used at the campus. And the only word we got was- The Faff. Confused already? Let us explain, actually, Faff is a euphemism for senseless, useless and almost everything less discussion on a topic. Very faffy that word actually is!
And to this Kanika Virmani, students MDI confirms that “Faff” is one word which can be heard quite often, it is a euphemism for something that is a more or less nonsense.
There is also one thing in common among the residences of MDI Gurgaon, the use of the word ‘It depends’, a word that they say along with just everything.
For instance, if you would ask about the Life at Campus MDI Gurgaon, you would hear, it depends on how you make it. Or, about the best eatable at Sharma ji, the answer would be, it depends what exactly you want to eat. But trust us this often used term made us feel like some sort of – Word Unity, as simply everyone uses it.
Though the usage of this word reflects the qualities of these budding managers, as rather saying everything direct, they act as a manager and give a very balanced answer. Well! That’s a great thing MDI, keep up the learning.
The Whatsapp Grapevineâ¦
Informal communications always find their ways, no one can stop them. Besides having a MDI ‘closed-group’ of Facebook, where ideas, thoughts and discussions are shared, there is also one more technology used to spread out the information which is Whatsapp.
Undoubtedly, the most active gossip grapevine here is the ‘Whatsapp’ group.
Information, be it about the fresh Samosas available or the case study of Japan’s Economy, are all discussed in this group. We wonder how everyone tolerates the constant pings! So the horizon of covering the target audience is just a Whatsapp away.
Everything they do, Is in the MANDEVIAN way
Mandevian is the official website of MDI Gurgaon, a very attractive, unique and information stuffed website. When we browsed through the site, we found that each section is presented with relevant information, and has been managed aptly. We guess the website is the reflection of the MDI’s managers; each section is well planned and apt.
The interesting part is the Gallery section which is loaded with beautiful pictures about the students, their campus, activities, seminars and just everything that gives an insight about how lively and action packed the campus is.
These would be rather perfect lines to say that everything they do, is in the Mandevian way; manageable, exact, and apt.
So in all, Life at Campus- MDI Gurgaon is a treat for future managers, as you will get to learn not only from the experienced faculty, but also from the mocks and other practical exposures. The unstoppable activities like Guest lectures, conferences, really exciting Mocks and fests make learning a continuous process here. If you wish to learn, explore and definitely play, MDI Gurgaon will be your Way!

Questions related to MDI Gurgaon
I am expecting 96-98 percentile in CAT 2020 based on my mocks. I have 89.8% in 10th and 71% in 12th and 68% in M.Tech Integrated Biotechnology (No work ex). Are these scores realistic to convert new IIMs and other colleges like MDI, SP JAIN, IIT etc?
Congratulations for your mock tests score.
The cut-off for top institutions depends upon your background, if you are an Engineer, you are required to score 99 percentile for top 10 colleges of India for MBA which includes IIM A, IIM B , IIM C etc. And if you are from non engineering background then 97-98 percentile also may works for you (general category).
As your 10th and 12th score is also good, you have great Chance of getting Interview calls from old IIMs and definitely from new IIMs too, also Colleges like IMT Ghaziabad, MDI gurgaon will definitely gives you an interview call if you apply for them with 98 percentile.
As currently you are scoring 96-98 percentile, try more hard and don't panic in exam, you may score more than 99 in actual exam.
I hope this information would be helpful for you.
All the best for your bright career ahead.
CAN I GET INTO MDI GURGAON WITH 96 PERCENTILE IN CAT. I HAVE 94.5 % IN ICSE, 95.25 %IN ISC, 7.8 SGPA FROM ST XAVIERS KOLKATA AND 0 WORK EXPERIENCE?
You have a descent profile though the graduation score is a little concern but overall your academics are up to the mark.
At 96 percentile, you stand a very good chance of getting admission to MDI Gurgaon. Generally, one gets a call from MDI at 95 percentile however for the final convert , 96-97 percentile is observed as the score.
All the best.
With 10th percentage 93.1, 12th percentage 90.4, btech cgpa 6.62, what chances do i have of getting a call into top iims, fms, mdi with a CAT score.of over 99 percentile?
Considering your Academic profile and CAT score for predicting selection in top IIMs is not sufficient. The selection depends on given factors:
- CAT scores
- Work Experience
- Gender Diversity
- WAT and Interview
- Academic Scores
- Overall profile
And being a General Engineers Male candidate, you must score above 99.6+ percentile for increasing chances of selection in top IIMs and FMS. With good performance in Interview and considerable work experience chances increases automatically.
