Goa Institute of Management (GIM) was established in 1993, It is situated in the Union Territory (UT) of Goa and is a standalone institute. The PGDM and PGDM- Healthcare Management programmes at GIM are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). GIM is accredited by SAQS and is a member of the AACSB. In NIRF 2021 ranking, GIM bagged the 35th spot with a score of 52.75 in the management category. Careers360 brings you an interview with Dr Sarangi Bhalani, Alumnus Goa Institute of Management. Careers360: Tell us about yourself briefly.
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: My name is Dr. Sarangi Bhalani, and I work for Optum, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, as a clinical consultant and data scientist. By education, I completed my MBBS undergraduate degree before enrolling in the GIM PGDM healthcare management programme.
Careers360: Were you always intrigued about the Healthcare Management field or something else made you choose it?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: I've always been interested in the healthcare sector, but my undergrad course inspired me to explore its managerial side. This turned out to be the best career move I've ever made.
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: My experience as a healthcare management student was quite illuminating; I got the privilege to learn something new about the healthcare sector every day, and I also had numerous opportunities to develop my soft skills.

Careers360: What were the parameters you looked for while selecting the PGDM (Healthcare Management) programme at GIM?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: I was looking for a healthcare management programme that would cover every aspect of the healthcare industry, including learning about pharmaceuticals, medical devices, data science, and analytics in the field as well as a programme which can cover all aspects of business like marketing, finance, operations and data analytics. I was also looking for a programme that would prepare me to work for US healthcare companies as well as Indian healthcare businesses. After searching, I was able to find the GIM healthcare management programme as the only programme that could accomplish these goals.
Careers360: What have been your key learnings from your college days in your journey so far?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: One of the most important lessons I took away from GIM was how the professors urged us to be informed about the healthcare sector. This advice is still helpful to me. Another important lesson I learned was to never stop learning and to always try to learn something new. Because of that, I am able to outperform my peers and always do my best job, which is crucial for any corporate career.

Careers360: Share a few good memories from your college days.
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: One of my favourite recollections is writing a review paper with a small group of friends and presenting it at an international healthcare conference at IIM Ahmedabad. The professors are all very helpful and supportive of attending these conferences.
My participation in the Give Goa project during the second year of the programme is another fond experience. In which we collaborate with NGOs in Goa and do our best effort to contribute.
Careers360: Did GIM provide assistance in industrial visits and internships during the PGDM in Healthcare Management course?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: Yes, GIM offers the best help in the industrial visits, including visits from primary to tertiary care hospitals, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing facilities, and private and public establishments. Students also complete projects on-site and put what they have learned in class to use. Additionally, GIM invites businesses from across all sectors for internships so that students can always select the sector in which they want to pursue a career.
Careers360: Were there any such activities you participated in and how did they help/ enrich your journey so far?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: Yes, the sectoral project, which has a significant weightage in the second year, has taught me a lot. I gained a lot of knowledge about conducting legitimate research, evaluating qualitative and quantitative findings, comparing data, and using statistical analysis. Prof. Devasheesh Mathur directed my project and research. After joining Optum, I participated in more than five research abstract and white papers, which gave me the opportunity to present them at an international level. This sectoral initiative sparked my interest in research papers.

Careers360: As we know there are regular technical advancements in the Healthcare industry. What is your opinion regarding this, should one constantly update himself/ herself with the latest trends and technologies to ensure a good career growth.
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: The healthcare sector is changing practically daily, and because research and innovation are developing at such a rapid pace, it is necessary to keep informed, learn new things, and acquire new skills in order to stay competitive.

Careers360: What is your suggestion for the future aspirants who want to join PGDM in Healthcare Management?
Dr Sarangi Bhalani: To prospective aspirants who are seeking not only a course that teaches you about all facets of the healthcare sector but also who want to grow themselves and want to be the ideal corporate fit, I would definitely recommend the PGDM in healthcare management.
