PSG Institute of Management (PSGIM) Coimbatore started as the Department of Management Science under the PSG College of Technology. PSGIM Coimbatore is affiliated to Anna University. In 1994, the department was granted autonomous status by the University of Madras and the University Grants Commission (UGC). All the courses offered at the institute are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). In his interview to Careers360, Ramakrishna shares his experience at PSGIM Coimbatore. What is student life like at the institute? How did he choose the MBA programme? Careers360: Tell us something about yourself such as from which place are you from?

Answer: I am Ramakrishna J R. I was born, raised, and schooled in Coimbatore. I did my schooling at Stanes Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, and my undergraduate in Production Engineering from PSG College of Technology.

Careers360: Presently which course are you pursuing and in which year are you?

Answer: I am currently a second-year student pursuing a full time MBA at PSG Institute of Management, PSG College of Technology.

Careers360: Did you face any difficulty in the initial months when you joined the institute?

Answer: My initial months of college were spent in the online mode, which led to a certain level of disconnect between my fellow classmates. But as the classes reverted to physical mode, these barriers of disconnect were broken down and I was able to break the ice.

Careers360: What activities are offered in the institute? Are there any clubs, extracurricular activities? Which ones have you taken up and are a part of?

Answer: I serve as the Chairperson of the Student Council of PSG Institute of Management. I can personally ascertain that the institute offers several opportunities for student activities starting from the Week of Wonders (WoW) to help break the ice between the first years, Talent Night to showcase and appreciate the talent of the students and the Spark Up, the institute’s annual day. Further, the institute being culturally diverse hosts festivities during Onam, Pongal and Diwali. The institute also offers events such as Déjà vu, which was the shopping carnival organised exclusively managed by the students. The college also houses exclusive stream based clubs such as Marketing Club, HR Club, Finance Club and Operations Club, while also having extracurricular clubs such as Sports Club, Quiz Club, Cultural Club and Movie Club.

Careers360: Describe a typical day at your institute-what do you do from the time you wake up till you go to sleep?

Answer: My usual day starts at 8:30 am at college and would probably go on till 6 pm usually. I attend my scheduled subject classes, and in between whenever I find time, I would be probably brainstorming ideas with student council members about future events and exchanging ideas about life, business and happenings with the same, which helps to ultimately create good bonding between my fellow batchmates and my juniors. ALPS, an outbound training centre at Anaikatti, eventually happens on weekends for personality development.

Careers360: Tell us about the faculty-student ratio here and about the teacher-student relationship in your understanding.

Answer: The faculty-student ratio is approximately 1:15, but every faculty is highly capable of interacting with any student that visits their cabin for doubts without any hesitation, which is highly appreciable. Certain faculties even encourage asking doubts through email even after working hours.

Careers360: What facilities do you have on the campus? What do you like here the most which you feel is unique and differentiating?

Answer: The campus houses an exclusive library facility that has a wide range of management books, journals, and e-resources. The institute also hosts stream specialised labs which includes, Trading Lab for Finance, Sales Lab for Marketing, CAL Lab for HR and Computer Lab for Decision Sciences. Similarly, there are exclusive conference halls such as the Convention Hall, Alumni Hall and Seminar Hall, and an all-purpose Yoga Hall. The most unique facility of the institute is the open air theatre of the campus called the Amphitheatre, which has stood witness to a number of student events and celebrations, and has been a meeting point for students during breaks.

Careers360: How comfortable are your hostels and how about the cleanliness factor over there?

Answer: The hostel rooms are generally a two-sharing room, which is maintained well on a regular basis by the hostel management. The hostels are always kept clean and tidy, and is a home away from home.

Careers360: What about the medical facilities? Can you avail requisite medical attention if needed in an emergency?

Answer: There are fully equipped first aid boxes on each floor of the campus. In case of an extreme emergency, the PSG Hospital is less than 500 metres away from the institute.

Careers360: How do you balance your studies, projects, exams and other activities?

Answer: The most important management skill that you pick up along the way during an MBA program is time management skill. I try to follow, “work while you work, play while you play strategy”. I try to prioritise my tasks and activities for the week. The course is designed in such a way that students are given enough time outside class hours to learn and grow, and whenever I get some free time, I try to complete a pending work and avoid procrastinating.

Careers360: Tell us about the clubs and societies at the campus and how significant are they from your point of view or students’ point of view?

Answer: There are academic focused stream clubs namely the Operations Club, Finance Club, HR Club and Marketing Club, and extracurricular clubs such as the Sports Club, Cultural Club, Quiz Club. As a student I believe that clubs help provide a holistic growth apart from studies and help to meet new people and grow networks with like-minded people.

Careers360: Is there any in-house magazine or journal for the latest events or happenings at the institute?

Answer: No, the college does not have a specific newsletter or magazine that highlights the latest events or happenings. However, the E-Cell publishes a newsletter that showcases student written articles regarding entrepreneurship. JCRM is a research journal which is published quarterly by the Institute.

Careers360: What are the popular hangouts at the institute? What, according to you, are the most-visited places nearby?

Answer: The popular hangout spots at PSG Institute of Management would be the Amphitheatre and B-School Bistro. However there are a number of hangouts spots outside the campus such as Dominos, Hidden Fork and Fun Mall, where we can spend quality time with friends over good food,

Careers360: How do you spend your leisure time at the campus?

Answer: I try to complete any pending assignments during my leisure time. If there are no pending academic work, I would be spending time with my student council team, brainstorming various novel ideas for the upcoming events like Week of Wonders, Déjà vu or any of the festive celebration, as usually one flagship event of PSGIM happens at least once a month.

Careers360: Do you have any Facebook page of your campus where the students express their views. jokes or ideas, or maybe even a blog where they write about their experience of life at campus?

Answer: No there is not a Facebook or a social media page where students can express their view openly. However, there is a Facebook and Instagram page run by the Institute which showcases student achievements and events and happenings that take place at the campus.

Careers360: What type of companies come for campus recruitment and what percentage of students get placed every year? How is the recruitment process here?

Answer: PSG Institute of Management attracts companies from various industries such as IT, BFSI, Consulting, EduTech and Online Services. More than 90% of the students from each passing out batch gets placed, while the remaining students take up entrepreneurship ventures. The Corporate Relations Centre (CRC) helps with the recruitment process and brings in the companies for placement, while providing upskill training sessions for the students to help sharpen the overall personalities that helps PSGIM students in having a competitive edge in the recruitment pool.

  • Mark sheets of X, XII or Diploma (3 years) Certificate
  • Qualifying Degree certificate, provisional certificate and mark sheets of all semesters or Consolidated mark sheet.
  • Transfer certificate from the institution last studied
  • Valid GATE score card and TANCET hall ticket for GATE qualified category
  • Certificate of Disability
  • Nativity Certificate only in electronic form / digitally signed e-Certificate. (if applicable)
  • Copy of identification certificate obtained from the HeadQuarters Tahsildar or Visa, Passport and letter registered in Police Station (For Srilankan Refugee candidates)
  • Experience Certificate (if applicable)

It's quite difficult to make prediction that whether you will be able to get into PSG College ,Coimbatore  as cut-off marks keep changing every year depending upon number of factors like

  • number of students that have appeared in TANCET MBA entrance examination,

  • difficulty level of the question paper,

  • number of available seats, reservation criteria etc

But yes,

When we go through previous year trends  then you hold a  low Chance with  41.667 marks.

For example,

As per previous year trend, an obc category student needs at least around 56.667 marks for PSG.
