Careers360: Tell us about your domain and your work profile. At the professional level, did you pursue the same field you were interested in or you switched?

Dr. Paritosh: My domain of expertise is public health, with a specific focus on Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition Health (RMNCH+A). My work profile demonstrates experience in program management, quality improvement, and capacity building within the public health sector.

As a Program Manager and public health professional, my key responsibilities include proposal and framework development for RMNCHA and quality improvement, designing and implementing quality improvement processes for improving the quality of Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) services, and supporting the scaling of Nurse mentoring programs. I was involved in capacity building activities, such as training nurse mentors, district and zonal specialists, and coordinating various nurse mentoring related activities.

I have a diverse range of experiences within the RMNCH+A domain. I was also involved in various initiatives and training programs aimed at improving reproductive health, maternal health, newborn and child health, adolescent health, and nutrition services. These include activities such as training healthcare providers, supporting the establishment of health clinics and nutrition rehabilitation centers, conducting workshops, and providing technical support for initiatives like Mission Indradhanush and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.

In addition to my program management and technical expertise, my work profile highlights involvement in system strengthening activities. This includes training government nurse mentors, implementing referral strengthening processes, contributing to strategy development, supporting supply chain management, and ensuring effective use of data for program monitoring and evaluation.

Overall, my work profile reflects a comprehensive understanding of the RMNCH+A domain, expertise in program management, quality improvement, capacity building, and knowledge of various public health approaches.

Careers360: Can you briefly tell us about your career path so far?

Dr. Paritosh: I began my career as a Hospital Manager in Bihar NRHM, after getting campus placement from IIHMR Delhi, where I learned valuable skills in managing staff, ensuring quality patient care, and coordinating various hospital departments. During this time, I also worked on obtaining quality certifications for the hospital with the support of development partners like Care India. This experience provided me with a strong foundation in healthcare operations and administration.

After more than a year in the hospital setting, I decided to transition to a career in public health. I joined IHAT as a District Technical Specialist, where I had the opportunity to work closely with District Magistrates and Chief Medical Officers in Balrampur district, Uttar Pradesh. In this role, I gained practical experience in public health implementation, strategy development, and advocacy with government officials. This experience broadened my understanding of population health challenges and the importance of working at a larger scale. Recognizing my growing expertise, I was promoted to the position of Zonal Technical Specialist for Allahabad division.

Here, my responsibilities expanded to providing support to district teams of specialists and nurse mentors across four districts. This role allowed me to contribute to the scaling of nurse mentoring interventions, further strengthening my skills in program management and implementation. After spending approximately 2.5 years in the zonal role, I was promoted to the position of State Program Manager in Lucknow. In this capacity, I supported directors and team leaders in implementing nurse mentoring interventions at the state level. I played a key role in ensuring the successful implementation of the program and providing guidance to the field teams.

Building on my experience and expertise, I then advanced to the role of Senior State Program Manager. In this position, I worked closely with directors and deputy directors, focusing on developing strategies, concept notes, frameworks, and program monitoring systems. Additionally, I played a vital role in conceptualizing theories of change and implementing practices to enhance the quality of care in maternal and newborn health.

Seeking new challenges and opportunities and zeal to work in Start-ups, I transitioned to the nonprofit sector and joined SCHOOL NGO and Basic Paradigm Pvt Limited Organization as a Program Manager. In my current role, I support directors in proposal and framework development, as well as the formulation of implementation strategies and concept notes. Additionally, I provide guidance and assistance to field teams, drawing upon my wealth of experience in public health program management.

Throughout my career, I have continuously grown and expanded my expertise in various aspects of public health, from hospital management to program management. Each step in my career path has provided me with valuable learnings, enabling me to make meaningful contributions to the field and address population health challenges effectively.

Dr. Paritosh: The industry work in the field of public health can vary from what is taught in academic institutions like IIHMR (Indian Institute of Health Management Research) college. While academic programs provide a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and essential concepts in public health, the practical implementation and realities of the industry may present unique challenges and nuances.

However, the industry work requires the application of this knowledge to real-world situations, such as designing and implementing public health programs, managing resources, collaborating with stakeholders, and adapting to the local context.

Dr. Paritosh: When I initially joined college, my thought process was a combination of excitement, curiosity, and a sense of purpose. Before joining IIHMR, I searched a lot about the college and public health. I had texted alumni of IIHMR asking about the course and scope as I was from a non-medical background. I had a genuine interest in public health and a desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Joining college meant embarking on a journey that would allow me to gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to contribute meaningfully to the field. Joining college was a step towards my professional development. I saw it as an opportunity to gain practical skills, network with professionals in the industry, and build a solid platform for future career prospects. I wanted to acquire the necessary expertise and credentials to pursue a successful career in public health.

Careers360: Apart from academics, what were the other activities you were involved in and how did it enrich your life?

Dr. Paritosh: Apart from my academic pursuits, I actively participated in various extracurricular activities during my college years, which greatly enriched my overall experience.

  • Class Representative for Conference and Placement: I had the privilege of serving as the Class Representative, representing my classmates' interests and concerns. As part of my responsibilities, I played a key role in organizing a conference on stress management during my first year. This experience enhanced my leadership skills, event management abilities, and the ability to collaborate with peers and faculty members. Also, I was CR in 2nd year and actively participated in collaborating with industries and organizations for placements.

  • Anchoring, Stand-Up Acts, and Dance: I had a keen interest in performing arts and entertainment. I actively participated in anchoring events, where I developed my public speaking skills and the ability to engage with audiences. Additionally, I showcase my talent through stand-up acts, which allowed me to explore my creative side and bring laughter to people's lives. I also enjoyed dancing and actively took part in dance performances, which provided an outlet for self-expression and physical fitness.

  • Sports Activities: Sports played a significant role in my college life, allowing me to stay physically active and build teamwork and sportsmanship skills. I am proud to have achieved notable accomplishments in sports during my college years. I won a gold medal in the 5 km health run, which not only showcased my commitment to fitness but also highlighted my endurance and determination. Additionally, I excelled in table tennis, winning gold medals in both doubles and mixed doubles events. Moreover, I achieved success in cricket, contributing to my team's accomplishments and fostering a sense of camaraderie and competitive spirit.

  • Blood Donation Drives: I strongly believe in the importance of giving back to the community, and one way I did so was by actively participating in blood donation drives. These drives provided an opportunity to contribute to a noble cause and help save lives. By donating blood, I felt a sense of fulfillment and made a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

  • Conference Participation: I had a keen interest in expanding my knowledge and staying updated with the latest trends and advancements in my field. As a result, I actively participated in multiple conferences related to my area of study. These conferences provided a platform for networking, learning from experts in the field, and sharing ideas with like-minded individuals. Additionally, I follow prominent figures in the field of public health and organizations that are at the forefront of healthcare innovation. This allows me to stay informed about emerging trends, research findings, and best practices.

I believe in continuous learning, and I frequently read research papers to deepen my understanding of specific topics and stay up to date with the latest advancements in public health. I also actively engage in discussions with my colleagues and other public health experts to exchange insights, share updates, and discuss challenges and opportunities in the industry. This collaborative approach helps me gain diverse perspectives and broaden my knowledge.

To further contribute to the dissemination of information and facilitate knowledge sharing, I have started a weekly newsletter on LinkedIn called "Mentor's Pulse."
