In an interview with Careers360, Dr. Urvashi Makkar, Former Director, IMS Ghaziabad expresses her thoughts about the responsibilities of B-schools in India so as to train students for emotional intelligence and functional skill sets.  

Dr. Makkar further describes the selection criteria where students are shortlisted with the help of a matrix to assess the strengths of individual candidates. She also suggests students to be alert while selecting a B-School and focus on the curriculum and teaching techniques.

Careers360: How has the value of management education in India changed in past few years? How do you foresee the MBA scenario?

Dr. Urvashi Makkar: Education sector has been currently revolutionized with lots of new innovations happening not only in our country but globally. In the education sector, specifically, the management education that is being innovating day by day and what was considered highly happening a decade ago has become obsolete today. In the Management domain, Corporates expect a ready-made skill set which would deliver the result from the next day. Being a B-School, you have to train the students on one side for emotional intelligence and functional skillset on the other side.

 

B-schools in Private Sector are facing uneven competition from Public/Government sector. The Institutions of excellence like IIMs are having huge leverages of funding support and mammoth infrastructure from the government on one hand and best brains as input quality of students on the other hand. Despite these leverages, their contribution towards society is minimal in terms of number of management graduates produced. Private B-schools are catering to the masses and especially to the segment of students who actually need to develop competency skills according to the need of the corporate sector. The contribution of Private B-schools towards nation building is bigger in size as they are serving a lower base of the pyramid and creating value for the masses. In the coming years, Management Education will be having a secured future as nowadays every organization requires talented manpower with a pre-requisite skill set. Also, Government stability and growth vision will act as a favorable foundation for the upcoming graduates.

 

Careers360: Do you think the MBA tag is losing its sheen? If so, then what according to you are the reasons?

Dr. Urvashi Makkar: In a developing country like India, the need of B- schools is highly vital as four out of five companies plan to hire a management graduate, But out of so many B-schools only a few percent are remarkable to provide these required graduates with the adequate skill set. More and more institutes are mushrooming and students are attracted towards them by their placement ads and prestigious MBA tag. The students of most general B-schools are seen as salesmen in their training or as agents of various finance companies. The increased number of schools and passed out students has reduced the shine of a Management degree. Students pay huge amounts of money to get into these schools but may or may not get jobs as expected.

Aspirants have to be more alert while doing a choice as it plays a significant factor. The beginning of their professional learning must be well versed with the upgraded curriculum and latest technology. 

 

Careers360: What is the total intake in the flagship PG programme in Management in your institute?

Dr. Urvashi Makkar: AICTE has approved two years full-time PGDM Programme of IMS Ghaziabad to intake 360 students. We have to be exhaustive in selecting the right fit in terms of trainable material as these two years will bring a professional transformation in the life of the candidate. The Annual fee is Rs. 3, 45,000 inclusive of Tuition, Admission and Examination Fees. The total fees is Rs. 6,95,000

 comprising of 2 years full-time PGDM Programme, Seven additional certification courses, a laptop and Free International Tour. Educational Loan facility is also available through reputed banks.

 

Careers360: How has been the placements at your institute for 2015 batch? Any sector/function specific trend that you noticed during the placement season this year?

Dr. Urvashi Makkar: In PGDM 2013-15, Placements graph has reached up to 200%. We had 180 students as per the outmoded approval of AICTE. 176 opted for placements and 4 have been inclined towards entrepreneurship. Rs. 5 LPA is the Average Annual Package and the students have received 4 international offers. The institute had witnessed prominent ‘A’ listed recruiters who visited for PGDM recruitment are Ernst & Young, Amul, Total Oil, Citibank, Dabur, RBS, Copal Partners, Bank of America, Capital Via, ITC, VIP, Greenply, Hindware, Asian Paints, XL Dynamics Amazon.com and many more. International brands like Buoy Group, Amex, Redignton, Abbot Healthcare, Oracle, Vodafone, Bose, Deloitte US India came to recruit from IMS Ghaziabad.

 

Careers360: What will be your selection criteria for MBA/PGDM programme for academic session 2016? Is it any different from the last year?

Dr. Urvashi Makkar: The Selection Criteria is a matrix, comprises of significant factors like Academic Score (based on 10th, 12th and Graduation scores), Test Score (CAT / MAT /CMAT / ATMA / GMAT score), Written Expression Test, Group Discussion, Personal Interview and Director Assessment. All the factors carry separate weightage as each is having its own importance. The cumulative score obtained by the candidate decides the admission to PGDM at IMS Ghaziabad. The purpose of forming this matrix is to assess the real strength of the candidate and to allow them to perform at various levels. The selection process will be the same; however the cutoffs will be slightly stringent in order to attain best of the best talent at IMS Ghaziabad.

There is no bias against gender or academic diversity, as we have 2 girls in response to 3 boys in the current academic session. These countries have a wide range of database and cannot be ignored by the scholars. As a result, Western bias shall automatically be reversed.

As per your concern, the college timing always gets to change every year and it is totally in the hands of the administration department of the college also, the usual timing will be around 9am to 5pm in the evening so it is totally like the 9-5 job and hence, you have tto attend the whole classes
