Are IRMA Alumni fulfilling their rural dreams?
While IRMAcontinue to enjoy leading status among B-schools with specialization in management programmes for rural development, its alumni work profiles available on LinkedIn presents a contrast as top shares of the alumni base on the professional networking site work for corporate world and live in big cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
Contrary to its image and ethos, the IRMA alumni shun their rural dream as they enter and progress in their career, indicates the available LinkedIn data.
As per the latest available profiles of IRMA Alumni on LinkedIn, top 10 companies with respect to largest share of IRMA alumni’s current working place include ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Lombard, and ITC Limited.
Interestingly, the IRMA alumni who spend two years at the institute vowing to work for the rural sectors and engage with rural population for developmental projects, live in Metro cities and big towns, according to their profile details on LinkedIn.
IRMA Alumni contrast IRMA’s Mission & Philosophy
“The Institute of Rural Management Anand is India’s leading school in rural management committed to acting as the catalyst and facilitator of rural prosperity. IRMA educates those inspired to work with organisations serving the rural sector and engaging directly with rural communities,” reads the IRMA Philosophy.
In its mission statement, the institute says that its mission is to promote sustainable, ecologically-friendly, and equitable socio-economic development of rural people through professional management. “IRMA strives to achieve this mission by creating a new breed of professional rural managers with the appropriate ethos and values,” the statement further adds.
But a peek into the alumni profiles available on LinkedIn portrays a completely different picture of the institute.

IRMA Director Jeemol Unni, however, emphasizes that “IRMA trains professional managers for rural sector and produces cutting edge knowledge on rural issues. IRMA’s Rural Management programme caters to organizations working for rural poor.”
Also, according to the institute, IRMA students go through a tough curriculum which has a unique feature of placing them with development organisations in rural areas in three separate segments during the two year programme. As per the IRMA’s selection criteria, the institute admits students after judging their ability, aptitude, attitude and adaptability for the specialized discipline of Rural Management and to serve the rural sector. But, does institute’s judgment on these parameters really bring on board students who have urge to work for rural development? Do they really stick to the rural India? Perhaps not.
According to the LinedIn profiles of IRMA Alumni, Mumbai is the most favourite living area for IRMA alumni, with 14.22 per cent of them currently living in this metro city. Mumbai is followed by other big cities like New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru as the current place of living for IRMA alumni.
