An Interview with Amit Mahajan - Alumnus of JIMS Jaipur

Careers360: Tell us about your domain and your work profile. At the professional level, did you pursue the same field you were interested in or you switched?

Amit Mahajan: My domain is finance and I am currently the Senior Branch Manager at Yes Bank. I handle the Chandigarh division. Yes, I have pursued the finance domain.

Careers360: Can you briefly tell us about your career path so far?

Amit Mahajan: I started my professional career in the banking sector with Axis Bank, graduating to managerial level at HDFC Bank, Yes Bank and ICICI Bank. I have recently re-joined Yes Bank as Cluster Head.

Careers360: Is the industry work different from what you learnt at the College?

Amit Mahajan: Yes, initially, one feels a bit distracted by the practical approach. However, if one were to introspect, it is all those concepts that we learn in class that are operational in the field.

Careers360: How do you think your time in college has added value to your life, both professional and personal?

Amit Mahajan: The time I had spent at JIMS , Jaipur was life changing . I had participated in many extra curricular activities and thereby was able to overcome the fear of rejection. In fact, these activities helped to orient myself towards sales and marketing .

Careers360: What was your initial thought process when you joined the College?

Amit Mahajan: I wanted to join a business school that was a national brand. I wanted to be recognised as an alumnus of a well-known business school where academics and placements were top-notch. I found JIMS Jaipur to be meeting both the parameters.

Careers360: You must have spent a memorable time at JIMS Jaipur. Do you miss being a part of it? Share a few good memories.

Amit Mahajan: The time spent at JIMS, Jaipur is one of the most beautiful moments in my life. The interactions with professors, the time spent in the canteen during college fests were truly amazing. I remember being part of the placement team. It was truly a challenging experience as the recession had just hit the industry. With our resilience and determination, we were able to outperform and fetch good placements for our batch. That time was truly amazing !!

Careers360: Briefly take us through your life at the campus, the activities you used to do and your routine life.

Amit Mahajan: My life at JIMS Jaipur used to start with the morning at 9 am, followed by lectures, seminars, and workshops. The routine life used to become more interesting with guest lectures, industrial visits, fests and inter-collegiate events. All this routine used to turn upside down with the exams. But then those tricky questions of the exam and their answers were always eye-opening for me.

Careers360: Apart from academics, what were the other activities you were involved in and how did it enrich your life?

Amit Mahajan: As I had stated earlier, I was involved in club activities, fests and sports events as well as inter-collegiate events. I used to be part of community outreach programs organized by Institute .The community outreach programs broadened my horizon and helped develop empathy and compassion for the less fortunate .

Careers360: How did you keep updated with the industrial requirements and what was the role of the institute in it?

Amit Mahajan: The library at JIMS Jaipur played an important role in helping me stay abreast with the developments in the world. We were provided with a free personal subscription to The Economic Times and Times of India, making us invariably develop the reading habit. The library is a gold mine where you would find books by reputed authors, mainly international, as well as reputed academic journals, which help in the development of a holistic perspective.

Careers360: You are a proud alumnus of this top College. What is the best part of the Institute from a student's perspective?

Amit Mahajan: The best of JIMS , Jaipur is the quality of faculty . I must say the faculty is top notch and they go an extra mile to ensure that you get the best from the business school.

Careers360: What is your suggestion/guidance for the aspirants?

Amit Mahajan: My suggestion for management course aspirants is to work on fundamentals and stay focused on your career goals.
