JIPMAT Previous Year Questions
Candidates can use JIPMAT previous year questions to understand the types of questions asked and practise under exam-like conditions. Solving these questions can help improve speed, accuracy and time management.
Q1. Which of the following is the value of $m$ for which the polynomial $x^4+10x^3+25x^2+15x+m$ is exactly divisible by $x+7$?
$-91$
$-101$
$15$
$115$
Correct Option: 1
If polynomial is exactly divisible by $x+7$, then on putting $x=-7$, value of polynomial must be zero.
On substituting $x=-7$ in the polynomial, we get:
$(-7)^4+10(-7)^3+25(-7)^2+15(-7)+m=0$
$\Rightarrow 2401-3430+1225-105+m=0$
$\Rightarrow 91+m=0$
$\Rightarrow m=-91$
Q2. The population of a village is $5000$. If in a year, the number of males were to increase by $5%$ and that of females by $3%$ annually, the population would grow to $5202$ at the end of the year. If $M$ is the number of males and $F$ is the number of females in the village, then $(M,F)=$
$(3000,2000)$
$(2800,2200)$
$(2600,2400)$
$(2700,2300)$
Correct Option: 3
Initial population $=5000$
New population $=5202$
Percentage increase $=\frac{5202-5000}{5000}\times100%$
$=\frac{202}{5000}\times100%$
$=4.04%$
By using Alligation:
Ratio of male to female $=\left(\frac{4.04}{100}-3\right):\left(5-\frac{4.04}{100}\right)$
$=1.04:0.96$
$=26:24$
So ratio of Male & female in total population of $5000$ is $26:24$.
So, number of male $(M)=2600$ and number of female $(F)=2400$.
Q3. Two poles of height $6$ m and $11$ m stand vertically upright on a plane ground. If the distance between their foot is $12$ m, then distance between their tops is:
$12$ m
$14$ m
$13$ m
$11$ m
Correct Option: 3

Pole 1, $AB=6$ m
Pole 2, $CD=11$ m
Distance between their foot, $BD=12$ m
And $AB$ & $CD$ are perpendicular to $BD$.
So, on this basis $ED=6$ m and $AE=12$ m.
Triangle $ACE$ is a right-angle triangle, wherein $AE=12$ m and $CE=5$ m.
So, by applying Pythagoras theorem:
$AC=\sqrt{12^2+5^2}$
$=\sqrt{144+25}$
$=\sqrt{169}$
$=13$ m
Q4. Match List I with List II.
| List I | List II |
|---|---|
| A. Mean of first five prime numbers is | I. $12$ |
| B. Mean of all factors of $24$ is | II. $7.5$ |
| C. Mean of first six multiples of $4$ is | III. $5.6$ |
| D. If the mean of $x-5y$, $x-3y$, $x-y$, $x+y$, $x+3y$ and $x+5y$ is $12$, then $x$ is | IV. $14$ |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
A-II, B-I, C-III, D-IV
A-III, B-II, C-IV, D-I
A-I, B-IV, C-II, D-III
A-IV, B-III, C-I, D-II
Correct Option: 2
A. The mean of the first five prime numbers is:
$=\frac{2+3+5+7+11}{5}$
$=\frac{28}{5}=5.6$
Option III from List-II.
B. The mean of all factors of $24$ is:
Factors of $24=1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24$
Mean $=\frac{1+2+3+4+6+8+12+24}{8}$
$=\frac{60}{8}=7.5$
Option II from List-II.
C. The mean of the first six multiples of $4$ is:
First six multiples of $4=4\times1,4\times2,4\times3,4\times4,4\times5,4\times6$
Mean $=\frac{4\times1+4\times2+4\times3+4\times4+4\times5+4\times6}{6}$
$=4\left(\frac{1+2+3+4+5+6}{6}\right)$
$=4\times\frac{21}{6}=14$
Option IV from List-II.
D. If the mean of $x-5y$, $x-3y$, $x-y$, $x+y$, $x+3y$ and $x+5y$ is $12$, then $x$ is:
Mean $=\frac{\text{sum}}{\text{number of numbers}}$
$12=\frac{6x}{6}$
So, $x=12$.
Option I from List-II.
Q5. Given below are two statements based on the following:
If $A$ and $B$ are independent events such that $P(A)=p$, $P(B)=2p$ and $P(\text{exactly one of }A,B)=\frac{5}{9}$.
Statement I: $p=\frac{1}{3}$
Statement II: $p=\frac{5}{12}$
In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Correct Option: 1
$P(A)=p;\ P(\text{not }A)=1-p$
$P(B)=2p;\ P(\text{not }B)=1-2p$
Probability (exactly one of $A,B$) $=\frac{5}{9}$
$P(A)\cdot P(\text{not }B)+P(\text{not }A)\cdot P(B)=\frac{5}{9}$
$p(1-2p)+(1-p)2p=\frac{5}{9}$
$3p-4p^2=\frac{5}{9}$
$27p-36p^2=5$
$36p^2-27p+5=0$
By solving this quadratic equation, $p=\frac{5}{12}$ or $p=\frac{1}{3}$.
Q6. The digit in the unit's place of the number represented by $7^{95}-3^{58}$ is:
$0$
$4$
$6$
$7$
Correct Option: 2
For the unit digit cyclicity of $7$ & $3$ is $4$.
Unit digit of $7^{95}$: $\operatorname{Rem}(95/4)=3$. So, power $95$ is equivalent to power $3$.
Unit digit of $3^{58}$: $\operatorname{Rem}(58/4)=2$. So, power $58$ is equivalent to power $2$.
$7^{95}-3^{58}=7^3-3^2$
$=343-9$
$=334$
So, unit digit $=4$.
Q7. A train starts full of passengers. At the first station, it drops one-third of passengers and takes $280$ more. At the second station, it drops one-half of the new total and takes $12$ more. On arriving at the third station, it is found to have $248$ passengers. The number of passengers in the beginning was:
$156$
$288$
$564$
$608$
Correct Option: 2
Let the total number of passengers in the beginning $=6x$.
First station:
Dropped passengers $=\frac{1}{3}(6x)=2x$
Remaining passengers $=4x$
New passengers $=280$
Total passengers $=4x+280$
Second station:
Dropped passengers $=\frac{1}{2}(4x+280)=2x+140$
Remaining passengers $=2x+140$
New passengers $=12$
Total passengers $=2x+152$
Third station:
$2x+152=248$
$x=48$
Total number of passengers in the beginning:
$6\times48=288$
Q8. In a cricket team of $11$ players, the average age is $28$ years. Out of these, the average ages of three groups of three players each are $25$ years, $28$ years, and $30$ years respectively. If in these groups, the captain and the youngest player are not included, and the captain is eleven years older than the younger player, then the age of the captain is:
$33$ years
$34$ years
$35$ years
$36$ years
Correct Option: 3
Let the age of the captain $=x$.
Age of the youngest player $=x-11$.
According to the question:
$11\times28=3\times25+3\times28+3\times30+x+x-11$
So, $308=238+2x$
So, $x=35$ (age of captain).
Q9. A member consists of two digits whose sum is $8$. If $18$ is added to the number, its digits are interchanged. The number is:
$26$
$35$
$53$
$62$
Correct Option: 2
Let the two-digit number $N=ab=10a+b$.
Reverse of $N=ba=10b+a$.
Condition 1: Sum of digits $=8$
$a+b=8$ … Equation 1
Condition 2: $N+18=$ Reverse of $N$
$10a+b+18=10b+a$
$9(b-a)=18$
$b-a=2$ … Equation 2
On solving both equations:
$a=3,\ b=5$
So, the number $N=35$.
Q10. A candidate scoring $25%$ marks in an examination fails by $30$ marks while another candidate who scores $50%$ marks gets $20$ marks more than those required to pass. The pass percentage is:
$30%$
$33%$
$35%$
$40%$
Correct Option: 4
Let maximum marks $=100x$.
Candidate 1 score $=25%$ of $100x=25x$.
As per the given statement, candidate 1 fails by $30$ marks.
So, passing marks $=25x+30$ … Equation 1
Candidate 2 score $=50%$ of $100x=50x$.
As per the given statement, candidate 2 gets $20$ marks more than the passing marks.
So, passing marks $=50x-20$ … Equation 2
From equations 1 & 2:
$25x+30=50x-20$
$\Rightarrow x=2$
Passing marks $=25x+30=80$
Maximum marks $=100\times2=200$
Pass percentage $=\frac{80\times100%}{200}=40%$.

Q2. Fill in the blank with a suitable preposition.
He broke _____ in the middle of his speech.
of
apart
down
for
Correct Option: 3
To solve this question, let’s understand the meanings of phrasal verbs:
Broke apart - refers to something being separated into pieces or fragments, often forcefully or violently.
Broke down - refers to a sudden and intense emotional collapse as well as to the failure or malfunction of a machine or system.
Rest broke of and broke for are unidiomatic.
So the right answer is broken down.
Q3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Man's growth from barbarism into civilization is supposed to be the theme of history. But sometimes, looking at great stretches of history, it is difficult to believe that we are very much civilized or advanced. There is enough of want of cooperation today as we see one country or people selfishly exploiting another.
Man in many ways has not made very great progress from other animals. Still, we look down upon the insects as almost the lowest of living things and yet the tiny bees and ants have learnt the art of co-operation and of sacrifice for the common good far better than man. If mutual co-operation and sacrifice for the good of society are the test of civilization, we may say that the bees and ants are superior to man. The old saying goes as follows: "For the family, sacrifice the individual, for the community, the family, for the country, the community, and for the soul, the whole world." It teaches us the lesson of co-operation and sacrifice for the larger good which we may have forgotten. How wonderful it is to see men and women, and boys and girls smilingly going ahead on the path of progress without caring any pain or suffering? Well, may they smile and be glad for the joy of serving a great cause which is theirs; and for those who are fortunate, comes the joy of sacrifice too.
Q. How can we be truly civilized?
by getting more wealth
by getting more power
by getting higher education
by developing qualities of mutual help
Correct Option: 4
By referring to the line, “If mutual cooperation and sacrifice for the good of society are the test of civilization” we can get our answer. The line means that a lack of cooperation and good for society are the challenges that stop man from being truly civilized.
Q. What is the basic reason of exploitation of one man by another?
Moral Turpitude
Lack of Education
High Ethics
Weakness of some people
Correct Option: 1
First let’s understand the word Turpitude, which means wicked behavior. Now let’s refer to the line in the 1st para, “there is enough of want of co-operation today as we see one country or people selfishly exploiting another. So it is clear that the only valid reason for the exploitation of one man by another.
Q. What is the theme of above passage?
The Rise and Fall of Empires
Man's search for Truth
Man's Moral and Spiritual Development
Man's quest for Idealism
Correct Option: 3
The passage highlights the transformation of man through learning spiritual lessons of cooperation, family, community, and sacrifice. The following lines/phrases: "Man's growth from barbarism into civilization" and "For the family... suffering?" are helping us to decide the answer so option 3 is the right choice.
Q4. Fill in the blanks by the proper preposition in the sentence.
What is the time ___ your watch?
on
by
in
with
Correct Option: 2
“By” here means according to so that goes well in the context.
Q5. In this question, out of the four options choose the one which can be substituted for the sentence.
One who feels at home in every country
Metropolitan
Cosmopolitan
Citizen
Denizen
Correct Option: 2
One who feels comfortable and like home in every country is known as Cosmopolitan.
Q6. In this question, a sentence has been given in Active voice. From the given options, choose the one which best expresses the given statement in Passive voice.
The cat drank all the milk.
All the milk was drank by the cat.
All the milk has been drunk by the cat.
All the milk was drunk by the cat.
All the milk had been drunk by the cat.
Correct Option: 3
To solve this question focus on the object of the active sentence ("all the milk") and make it the subject of the passive sentence. Now the verb "drank" must be converted to its past participle form "drunk," so option 3 is the right choice.
Q7. Certain parts in the following sentence are underlined. One of the parts has an error. Identify that part from the given options.
She is not one of those who is so foolish.
She is not
one of
who is
so foolish
Correct Option: 3
While referring to "one of those" (a plural noun), the relative pronoun "who" should be followed by a plural verb. Therefore, "who is" should be corrected to "who are." The right choice is 3.
Q8. From the given options, identify the tense used in the sentence:
"Everyone shall be reaching by tomorrow."
Future Indefinite tense
Present continuous tense
Future perfect continuous tense
Future continuous tense
Correct Option: 4
In the above sentence the tense is used to describe actions that will be ongoing at a specific time in the future “shall be”. So option 4 is the right choice.
