IIMs to submit seat intake increase plan to MHRD
Seat intake at the 20 IIMs is slated to increase in the upcoming academic years as the Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has asked the IIMs to submit expansion plan at a meeting held with IIM Directors on September 20. The Directors of respective IIMs are expected to submit the expansion plan based on their infrastructure capacity.
"More students will now get the opportunity to study in the best institutes. The IIM directors will submit their action plans on the expansion of student intake capacity," Javadekar was quoted saying. According to MHRD officials, the 20 IIMs admit as many as 10,000 students each year. This seat capacity across IIMs will now be increased to 20,000. Around 3,700 students are admitted to the flagship 2-year postgraduate programmes at 20 IIMs through CAT.
The Union HRD Minister also talked about the expansion of the Doctoral programmes at IIMs. According to him, the proposed increase in the number of quality Ph.D programmes will address the issue of faculty crunch in the institutes.
In the meeting, it was also decided that IIMs will participate in the government initiative to build 20 world class institutes. Out of these, 10 will be government institutes and the rest will be private institutes. As per MHRD officials, IIMs will participate in creating contents for SWAYAM, which is an Information Technology platform hosting Open Online Courses and will provide high-quality education on various subjects from 9th standard to Under Graduate and Post Graduate students - covering all disciplines. SWAYAM is a free course which can be availed online and shall be a complete channel of new Open Learning system comprising of lectures, reading materials, tutorials, mid exams, final exams, and certification.
