GMAC acquires NMAT from NMIMS; renames exam as NMAT by GMAC
The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the conducting body of GMAT has acquired the NMAT exam in India from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS). Assuming the ownership of the exam, GMAC has renamed it as ‘NMAT by GMAC’.
Sangeet Chowfla, President and CEO of GMAC said, “We see great opportunity in the Indian management education marketplace, which is one of the most dynamic education markets in the world.” He added, “The NMAT exam furthers GMAC’s mission to help build the study of management education locally, regionally and globally, and to make admissions accessible and successful for more candidates.”
Chowfla continued, “NMIMS has played an important role â along with other leading Indian business schools, many of whom are GMAC’s member schools â in developing a society, a business sector and a national policy making sector that value and support management education as a path to individual, societal and national success.”
Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor, NMIMS University, said, “Over the last two decades since NMAT was conceived and launched, the test has become more candidate friendly and steadily grown, especially after it evolved from paper pencil mode to computer based. Our vision is to develop the NMAT into an industry standard test for India’s business schools. At NMIMS, we share GMAC’s vision of creating an admission test for the Indian management education market that makes management programs accessible to a more diverse pool of candidates.”
NMIMS currently offers 800 MBA/PGDM seats under its different specialization.
Pattern and Schedule to remain same
The NMAT by GMAC exam will be offered between October and December 2015, and registration will commence in July 2015. Pearson VUE, the body which conducts the computer based NMAT since 2009, will continue to work with GMAC as well.
For the NMAT aspirants, the process of taking the exam will remain the same. According to GMAC, there are plans to improve some aspects of score reporting to schools that accept the NMAT by GMAC, and will, in subsequent years, incorporate additional features that will enhance the test-taker experience.
More participating institutes
The NMAT by GMAC will have more participating institutes. Till last year, the scores of NMAT were accepted by NMIMS for the MBA programmes of Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Shirpur campuses. Alliance University, SRM University, BML Munjal University, VIT University, ICFAI Business School (IBS) and Ansal University will also accept the NMAT by GMAC exam scores for admissions to their graduate management programs from the academic year 2016-18.
Dr. M. J Xavier , Executive Director, VIT University said, “We would like to congratulate Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) for taking this strategic step, which will further contribute towards the growth of Indian graduate management education industry. NMAT is a reputed test with a diverse set of test takers, and with the management shift of the test to GMAC, we are sure it will generate multifold opportunities for the aspirants. VIT Business School will accept the NMAT- GMAC test for the MBA programs.”
“This development holds great significance for the future of Indian graduate management education as NMAT possesses a huge base of test takers and with the shift of management to GMAC, all schools will get access to a large pool of talented aspirants. SRM University is proud to be associated with GMAC for this initiative,” said Prof R. Muthusubramanian, Director, Admissions - SRM University.
The Graduate Management Admission Council owns Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT exam), used by over 6,100 graduate business and management programs worldwide. The GMAT exam for graduate business and management programs is conducted at 600 test centers in 113 countries across the year.

Is ECE ( in IIT Kgp) a good branch, to compete with C.Sc branh of NIT s ? Analyse the job opurtunities and higher studies etc.
Hi, according to your question it seems something similar. If I talk about top NIT's like NIT Trichy, MNNIT Allahabad or VNIT Nagpur then the CSE branch of these institutes gives a tough competition to CSE branch students IIT's also. Now coming on the IIT, Kharagpur's EEE branch so let me tell you EEE highest placement package from EEE branch is approx 1 Croreand the average package is approx 5 Lakhs. So overall you just see IIT Kharagpur is an IIT afterall so it will always be better than any of the NIT's in any branch.
If someone accepts NIT s any branch ,is it possible for him to sit in csab counseling
you can definitely sit for CSAB counselling even after you have accepted a seat in NITs. According to the guidelines for CSAB counselling , if you have seat in any of the NITs , while participating in CSAB counselling the seat which you have been allotted will remain safe and if you do get a seat from this round your previous allotted seat will be forfeited.
