Coronavirus Outbreak: IIMs to Cancel Convocation Due to COVID 19
IIM Ahmedabad - In view of the advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the WHO to avoid large gatherings due to COVID 19 Coronavirus, IIM Ahmedabad will not hold the Annual Convocation which was scheduled for March 21. The decision has been taken to reduce the chances of COVID 19 spread to candidates and families or friends as well as to the faculty member or others related to IIM Ahmedabad. The re-schedule of convocation ceremony will soon be updated.
IIM Bangalore - The convocation ceremony of IIM Bangalore was scheduled on March 20 which has been postponed due to COVID 19. Professor G. Raghuram, Director of IIM Bangalore says, “We have consulted all the stakeholder groups. This decision has been taken based on their inputs and subsequent deliberations, keeping in mind that your and your family’s safety is paramount. IIMB would also like to assure you that while we are geared to contain the spread of the virus on campus (thanks to our Administrative Staff), we have taken this decision to avoid putting you and your family at risk, both due to travel and the large gathering. We will continuously monitor the situation and when we feel that the situation enables us, the new date for the Convocation will be decided. The respective Programme Offices will get in touch with students regarding the receipt of the degrees.”
IIM Lucknow - Following the guidelines of WHO and GOV, IIM Lucknow has also decided to re-schedule its convocation ceremony. IIM Lucknow was to conduct its convocation ceremony on March 21, but the same has been postponed. The latest date of convocation will be available soon. Officials said that the decision has been taken in the national interest of containing the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.
IIM Indore - The 21st annual convocation which was scheduled on March 24 and 25 has been postponed for now by IIM Indore keeping in view the advisory issued by GOI and WHO. ‘We are closely monitoring the situation and the new date for the Convocation will be decided depending on how the situation unfolds in the coming days’, said Professor Himanshu Rai, Director, IIM Indore.
IIM Kozhikode - Due to the outbreak of coronavirus IIM Kozhikode has cancelled its convocation ceremony. Dr Debashis Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode, said, “Considering that the World Health Organisation has recently declared COVID-19 as a pandemic and the advisories issued by the Health Ministries of Union of India and Government of Kerala advocate avoiding public gatherings, we have taken the decision to postpone Convocation 2020 scheduled for April 3 and 4, indefinitely. At a time when the world is combating an unprecedented challenge of this magnitude, we at IIMK will stand by guideline issued by the governing bodies in the national interest. As dutiful citizens, we are vigilant towards the developing situation and have also geared up internally to take on the challenge. We will be announcing the new dates for the Convocation to the students in due course of time.”
Following the same footsteps, other B-Schools have also decided to cancel the major events and wait until any further notification from the government is reported. World Health Organization has now declared COVID-19 Coronavirus a Global Pandemic.
