CAT 2012 score inflation scam: MHRD sets up committee to probe
As a run up to the previous report on the CAT 2012 score scam, we had mentioned that the scores of 80 CAT 2012 takers had been inflated. The IIMs had filed an FIR on June 15, 2013. The probe is going on at the moment. The Ministry of HRD has set up a committee to investigate the matter.
The members of the committee include M Damodaran, Board of Governor, IIM Trichy; Ajay Pandey, Director In-Charge, IIM Ahmedabad and Devanand Tirupati, Dean, IIM Bangalore. The committee will probe into the matter on the areas and causes of the loopholes which caused the tampering of the scores. It will also look after the matter on if any other fraudulent activities have been undergone in terms of the scores of the 80 candidates or any other candidates as well.
The police have seized the computer hard disc from IIM Kozhikode in connection with the case which has been sent to forensic laboratory at Thiruvanthapuram. The CAT 2012 Convener Prof. SSS Kumar of IIM Kozhikode has also been questioned in this regard.
When Careers360 contacted Prof. Kumar, his response was, “The matter is under subjudice and investigation is under progress.”
Meanwhile, IIMs have sent the actual scores of the 80 candidates whose CAT 2012 scores have been tampered with from the master database to the B-schools like MDI Gurgaon, FMS, University of Delhi, DMS IIT Delhi etc. which has shortlisted or selected these candidates for the admission to their programs of 2013-15 batch. The CAT allied B-schools will act afresh on the fate of those 80 test takers.
The CAT website was hosted by M/s Web Weavers, a Lucknow based private IT company which is under the scanner at the moment. The computer based CAT 2012 exam was hosted by Prometric, the agency which conducted all the computer based CAT exams which were held since 2009.
The incident of the tampering of the CAT 2012 scores is similar to that of the hacking of the websites of Council of Indian School Certificate Examination and CBSE websites by a 20 year old student. The incidents are constantly raising the question of the cyber safety and security of the country’s premier exams which decide the fate of lakhs of students and ultimately, the future of India.
Careers360 will keep you updated on the developments of the case.
