Hi all,

We had an excellent guest lecture from Ashish Lath (CFA) in the Mergers and Acquisition class last week. Ashish heads the CEO's office at Snapdeal and has been an integral part of the company's evolution to its current avatar. He gave us lot of insights about E-commerce industry especially Snapdeal. We came to know the new management term acqui-hire which is an act of buying the company solely for the skills and expertise of staff rather than products and services of company. Apart from that we had lot of discussions about valuation and consolidation of e-commerce industry in future. The sessions like these keep us updated according to the latest trends and interact closely with the leaders in top management.

Today is an era of mergers and acquisition wave with India leading the list because of the advent of E-Commerce sector. SOIL curriculum will always have courses related to current scenario and SOIL management finalizes the courses after discussing with the industry leaders in 32 consortium companies. Now we are pursuing the course M&A in third semester and the faculty is our Program chair Ms.Neetika Batra. As a part of the course we had a guest lecture by Mr.Abhilash Lal who has spent more than 27 years in senior roles in all aspects of financial services including banking, consulting, insurance, investments and real estate across business development, strategy, and advisory as well as operations. He gave us a clear picture of how the companies are valued, how they get funds for acquisitions, who are the stakeholders involved, reason for M&A's etc. Overall it was an awesome knowledge sharing session and great learning experience.

Self Leadership and Consulting skills are the two important courses which our college founder Anil Sachdev is handling each year. Self Leadership was a unique course which only SOIL is having in the curriculum. It was conducted in a way distinct from usual class room sessions and the outcome of the course for each student is the understanding of self and overcome all the fears. In the final semester we are learning consulting Skills. Since our college founder is a consultant, he himself will tell a lot of his practical experiences which help us to correlate it with the theories in Peter block's flawless consulting book. So Self Leadership class will change the way you project yourself before huge audience and consulting skills will help you structure the thoughts and articulate it in a right way to earn the client's trust.

The thing which I like the most about SOIL is application based learning. As a part of Social Innovation program every student has to work with an NGO one day per week. I am working with an NGO named Esha-People for the blind. For them we have organized the fund raising cycling event Tour de vision on February 7, 2016. The event was grand success, we have raised funds around Rs.2,40,000 from the event. We could able to achieve this in a short span of 3 months. I felt that this success is possible because of applying the concepts taught in class, especially the framework we learnt in selling and Negotiation skills course which helps us reach out to right sponsors and pitch in about the event. I could remember one line from the faculty which impacted us “It’s not about me and my smartness; it’s about the customer and their greatness”.

I have worked with Bosch for 3 years. During my tenure with Bosch, there are some changes made in the organization structure. As an Engineer, I couldn't understand the impact it has created on the organization as a whole. In SOIL we had a course named Doing business in a global world. As a part of it, we had a class discussion of Bosch case study last week. It was taught by one of our International faculty Dr.Lilac Nachum who was a recipient of awards like Baruch College 2011 Best Teacher Award, 2012 Presidential Excellence Award. After the course I could easily relate it to my previous experience and think about the implications of it from a managerial point of view. This course is very important for the current scenario as most companies eyes for Global expansion to increase their market share. Thanks to SOIL for having it as a part of curriculum.

School of Inspired Leadership, SOIL has a unique Admission process called the Talent Appreciation Process. As a first part, Students who applied for the program is asked to write essays .Example- If you had all the time and resources in the world, what would you like to create and why? This helps you to understand what you dream about. The second part is a unique tool called Caliper which looks at your multiple intelligences. For instance how assertive you are, how much risk you are willing to take, how much resilience you have to pursue your goals etc. The third one is Talent Appreciation interview which will be done by senior leaders from one of SOIL’s consortium companies. They will find out what you are good at, your goals and priorities.

I am Rethina Kumar from the current batch of SOIL. The aspect which I like in SOIL is practical learning. Currently we are doing a course on Digital Marketing. Apart from that I am also working (as a part of SOIL’s Social Innovation Program) on raising funds for our NGO Esha-People for Blind through a cycling event named Tour De vision. For this event , we have created the website, Pages in Facebook, twitter and in other social medias. I am also using the SEO,SEM and Google analytics which I learnt in Digital Marketing class for promoting the event. Because of that I got a response from many cycling enthusiasts around Delhi NCR. The application based learning is not for this course alone, all the courses which are in SOIL’s curriculum is designed like this.

Initially I was hesitant to speak in public due to the fear which is hidden inside me. I always worried about the past and thinking too much about the future. We had a course named as Self Leadership as a part of Curriculum which was taught by our Founder Mr.Anil Sachdev. It’s very unique, helps me overcome my fears and transformed me completely. After that I have presented my paper in front of huge audience in Inspired Leadership conference. These kind of behavioral change is not alone for me,most people who joined SOIL experiencing the same. There are so many things in SOIL which makes it unique when compared to other B-schools.

I'm Srinidhi from the current batch (named 'Inspirers') of SOIL. I'm pursuing a course in General Management. Till date we've experienced the best faculty for every subject. It's really good to see the analytical thinking behind building an organization.

Annual Inspired Leadership Conference

Following the Prime Minister's much-trumpeted recent visit to the US, 'Digital India' seems to have acquired a new sheen. In this light, it was somewhat fitting that The School of Inspired Leadership (SOIL) hosted the 7th 'Inspired Leadership Conference' (ILC), on its campus in Gurgaon. And the theme this year was 'Inspired Leadership for Digital India'. The two-day conference brought together a host of people, among them business leaders and intellectuals, as well as young professionals and students.

On Day One, in his inaugural address, T V Mohandas Pai, chairman, Manipal Global Foundation, held forth on 'Digital India: Leadership Challenges and Opportunities'. He fascinated the audience by narrating the many disruptions that have ended up, over the centuries, transforming the world and the direction of history. Rounding off the day was a panel discussion on readying India for a digital revolution, and an 'open space' on how Digital India is impacting sectors as diverse as the media, e-commerce, manufacturing, logistics, FMCG, BFSI, advertising, IT, telecom, and travel and hospitality. On Day Two, the keynote address was given by Osama Manzar, founder, Digital Empowerment Foundation, ministry of communication and IT, who spoke about the social divide, and how the Digital India initiative can bridge this gulf, but not in the absence of a 'human connect'. On the final day, there was also a panel discussion on 'Leveraging Digital India for the Social Sector', and a special discourse by Swami Nikhilanand on 'Tuning Within - Energy behind all things Physical and Digital'. And an energetic recital combining theatre, music and dance - performed by students of SOIL and Delhi University - segued into a stimulating conversation on smart cities ('Accelerating Progress with Digital India: Big Data and Smart Cities').

In between, SOIL students presented a research paper on 'Digital India: Winning Strategies across Business and Social Sector', and a white paper report on the 'Impact of Digital India on Education Sector'.

"Educational institutes are accepting digital with open arms. It is humbling to see the disruption brought about by Digital India in the society," shared Pai, adding, with confidence, "Very soon, India will become a global digital power with the kind of progress it is making with the new generation".

"The disruptive technology has penetrated the rural sector and is working towards the elimination of middlemen and bringing profit direct to the manufacturer of the product," signed off Pai.

So, digitally, the future's bright. But hopefully not so bright that some become blind to the many challenges that lie ahead.
