MAT Exam 2023: Admit Card, Dates, Registration, Syllabus, Pattern, Results

The MAT entrance exam is conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA) four times a year – February, May, September, and December.  AIMA is conducting the MAT 2023 entrance exam in three modes namely – Computer-based test (CBT), Paper-based test (PBT), and Internet-based proctored test (IBT). As per the December MAT 2023 exam date, the registration process began in online mode. The last date to submit the MAT CBT 2 application form is December 11 and IBT is December 14.

Admit card for the MAT 2023 December cycle will be issued online two days after the closing of the registration window. The MAT 2023 question paper contains 200 MCQs from five sections - Language Comprehension, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Mathematical Skills, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Indian & Global Environment. The MAT 2023 result will be declared in the last week of December 2023. Candidates will be able to download the MAT Scorecard from the official AIMA website - mat.aima.in (Applicant dashboard).

What is the MAT exam?

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardized test conducted since 1988 that helps business schools (B-schools) screen applicants for admission to MBA and allied programs. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India recognized MAT as a national-level examination in 2003. 

Any B-school – National/ International – can consider MAT score as an admission input based on the scorecards issued to the candidates. The largest test in the country, MAT will continue to be your passport to over 600 B-schools across India. Around 20,000 candidates appear for the MAT exam in every session.

MAT exam 2023 will be conducted in the following modes of the test. 

• Paper-Based Test (PBT) 
• Computer-Based Test (CBT)
• Internet-Based Test (IBT)  

AIMA has prescribed the eligibility criteria for MAT exam 2023. Candidates who are going to appear for the exam must  meet the eligibility criteria as laid by the AIMA.  There is no age bar, candidates of any age can appear for MAT exam. Check below the detailed eligibility criteria.

• To apply for the examination, as per the MAT eligibility criteria 2023, a candidate must have completed graduation in any discipline from a recognized institute or university.
• Even final-year graduation students from any stream can apply for the exam. AIMA hasn’t mentioned any age limit for the exam.
• Interestingly, one can appear for the exam as many times as he/she wants.
• There is no specific age limit for MAT exam date 2023.

All India Management Association (AIMA) begins the December cycle applications for the MAT exam 2023 in online mode. The MAT registration 2023 dates for PBT, CBT, and IBT modes are different. Keep this in mind while filling out the MAT application 2023 form online at the official website. Here are some important things to know before registering for the MAT exam.

How to fill out MAT Application Form 2023:

• 1st Step: Register by providing the necessary details.  
• 2nd Step: Log in using email, password, and date of birth, and click on the “Submit” button.
• 3rd Step: Fill Registration Form & Choices for Management Institutes(MI).
• Candidates can select as many MIs on payment of an additional fee of Rs 118.
• 4th Step: Upload Photo and Signature - photograph (20KB to 150 KB) and signature (20KB to 150 KB)
• 5th Step: Make Payment of the registration fee through Debit / Credit Card / Net Banking.

• 6th Step: View/Download the Registration form and take a printout
• 7th Step: Update details if required. The candidate can edit a few specific details after downloading and reviewing the registration form.

Note: Candidates opting for both PBT and CBT have the added benefit of selecting 2 MIs additionally apart from the existing option of selecting 5 MIs. So they can select 7 MIs in total.

Application Fees

As per the latest exam pattern, AIMA conducts the MAT exam 2023 in both online mode and offline modes. Candidates can choose to appear in any mode or more than one mode of the MAT exam. It is advisable to check the pattern of the exam in detail to understand the marking scheme, duration of the exam, type of question, etc. The exam pattern for each format will be the same as given below.

The duration of the exam is of 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes). Each section has 40 questions and each question carries 1 mark. For each incorrect answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. Candidates are advised to strategize their preparation as per the exam pattern of MAT 2023. It will allow them to score better in the exam.

MAT 2023 Exam Pattern - Details

To have insights on exam day, candidates need to take up MAT mock test by visiting the official website of AIMA. The major advantage of taking the MAT 2023 mock test will be that candidates will be able to access their own performance before the actual exam and are able to gauge and change their preparation strategy if felt necessary. IBT mock test will be available on the official website.

The admit card for MAT 2023 PBT will be issued on December 7, 2023, and CBT 2, will be issued on December 13. The admit card will be available on various dates based on the exam date. Candidates will be able to download the MAT exam admit card by login into their dashboard, using a registered email ID and password. AIMA will not send a hard copy of the admit card to any candidate.

Details like the name of the candidate, photograph, signature, date of the exam, the name of the venue and address, etc. will be mentioned on the MAT 2023 admit card. The admit card is a must-have document as no candidate is allowed to appear for the exam without the admit card of MAT 2023.

How to download MAT Admit Card 2023 (CBT/ PBT/ IBT Mode):

Follow the steps below to download the admit card:

• Open the official website -mat.aima.in.
• Log in to the candidate's dashboard, using the registered email ID and password.
• Click on the view and download the MAT admit card.
• Download it as a PDF file and take a printout of the same.
• Keep it safe for future reference.

MAT 2023 Exam Day Guidelines (Not applicable for IBT mode)

• Candidates are advised to visit the exam centre one or two days prior to the exam to avoid last-minute confusion on the exam day
• Carry a pen with you if you are taking the exam in PBT mode
• Electronic gadgets like mobile phones, digital calculators, electronic watches, or any such items are prohibited, hence candidates must ensure they don't carry any such item with them to the exam centre
• A Digital photocopy of the MAT admit card 2023 will not be considered a valid ID proof
• It is mandatory for candidates to carry the original copy of the admit card.

The MAT 2023 result for the December cycle will be declared in the third week of December 2023. Candidates can check the result of the MAT exam and download the scorecard at the official website by login into their dashboard, using their registered email ID and password. AIMA does not send any copy of the result to the candidates through email or post. 

Candidates can use the MAT score to apply for more than 600 B-schools across India. Based on the MAT scores, MBA colleges accepting MAT scores will shortlist candidates for further admission rounds such as GD, PI, etc. Candidates should note that selection criteria will vary across MAT colleges.

How to check MAT 2023 Result:

• Login to candidates' dashboard 
• Click on the view MAT result
• MAT scorecard will show up
• Download your MAT scorecard and take its printout.

Details specified on the MAT Result 2023:

The scorecard comprises the following details,

• Marks obtained in each section - Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills,
  Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Composite Score & Indian & Global Environment.
• Overall MAT score.

The B-schools which accept MAT scores will shortlist the candidates as per their prescribed cutoff criterion. The MAT participating institutes will release their cut-off of MAT 2023 as soon as MAT result is announced. Basically, the candidates who meet the cutoff criterion are shortlisted for the selection process. 

The MAT 2023 cut off can either be in the form of percentile or marks. The cutoff score ranges from 250 to 700 vary from institute to institute. The cutoff depends on various factors including the Difficulty level of the test, the total number of test-takers, the total number of seats offered by an institute, etc.

MAT Cutoff - Participating Institutes

The MAT cut off of B-schools will be based on several factors such as score in MAT exam, number of test takers, previous year cutoff, etc. Those who meet the cutoff will be shortlisted for the selection/admission process. The MAT 2023 cut off will be released in the form of score.

A written test, Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) is a part of the MAT 2023 selection process. The writing test is also known as WAT (Writing Ability Test). Not all the MAT 2023 participating institutes conduct all three selection rounds. 

Final admission is offered on the basis of the candidate’s performance in all the rounds of the MAT 2023 selection process. Some institutes may also consider past academic records (marks in 10^th, 12^th, and graduation), work experience, and other achievements before offering the final admission.

MAT 2023 Participating Institutes

MAT scorecard is accepted by more than 600 B-schools. There are around 350 registered institutes under AIMA, that accept candidates' admission on the basis of MAT scores. Whereas, around 250 institutes that are not registered under AIMA also accept MAT scores for admission. 

Every participating institute has its own admission/selection procedure which generally includes a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. Candidates appearing for MAT 2023 are advised to check the process of each institute on the basis of their preference individually. GD and PI are an integral part of the MAT selection process 2023 which is conducted by various participating institutes. These rounds are usually conducted to check the interaction & communication skills and self-confidence of the candidates.

These rounds are to check the candidate's knowledge of current affairs, his or her views on a certain topic or situation and, how s/he reacts or responds to the questions they are unaware of.

Candidates need to perform almost equally well in these rounds as a certain weightage is given to these rounds in the final merit list.
