University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun celebrated its 12th Convocation on May 30, 2014 in New Delhi. The convocation saw the presence of Group Chairman of GMR Group, G M Rao.
In his Convocation address, Rao said, “UPES’ progressive vision of creating specialized professionals in the core sectors that can contribute in the economic growth of the country is highly admirable. Today, with the rapid development of the country especially in core sectors like Infrastructure, Transportation, Aviation, and our nation needs enormous skilled manpower to sustain the growth.”
Further, he added that UPES is the first Indian University to offer 77 specialization programs and the university in true sense is providing the fuel to the economic engine to our country.

“With great pride, I can say that no multinational company can afford to be absent from India because of its enormous intellectual man power,” he said. Rao added that India will be boosted by the strong fundamentals, abundance of natural resources, favorable demographics and resilient economic structure.
During the convocation ceremony, as many as 1620 students were awarded the Degrees, out of which 10 students were awarded Gold Medals by Mr. G M Rao. Besides, 33 Silver medals were awarded to meritorious students enrolled in different courses. Under the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), PhD degrees were also awarded. A total of 16 PhD degrees were awarded to PhD degrees were awarded to 16 working professionals and faculty/ staff of UPES.
Cairn Laureate Scholarship was bagged by Aamir Lokhandwal and Shivam Saxena. And, Lakshmi Narsiman B and Siddharth received G L&T Scholarship.
The university has launched 24 new programs like Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Planning, and Bachelor of Fine Arts. The first two programes can be pursued from School of Planning & Architecture and the last one from School of Design Studies.
