Common Admission Test (CAT)

Difficulty Level: CAT is a tricky exam. It tests the fundamental knowledge of subjects like English, Maths and Logical Aptitude. The students have to use their basic understanding and apply it to the complex questions—the questions in the entrance test range from moderate to high difficulty level.

Exam Pattern and Number of Attempts: Aspirants can take the CAT once every academic year. CAT has a sectional timer i.e. specific time limit allotted for every section.

Colleges Accepting CAT Score: IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) are exclusive to CAT and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) scores. As per NIRF 2023, six of the top 10 B-schools are IIMs. Other than IIMs over 200 plus colleges including IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), MDI Gurgaon, and IMT Ghaziabad accept CAT scores. All Xavier's colleges also accept the CAT score except for XLRI.

Return On Investment: Taking into account IIM Ahmedabad the median salary is INR 30 lakhs with a total fee of INR 30 lakhs for the regular postgraduate programme.

According to our research and calculations based on the numbers available on Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) – The University of Delhi website, it is the best college when it comes to college with a good return on investment (ROI) through a CAT score. With INR 1.10 lakhs as their annual fee for the management programme and a median salary of INR 31 lakhs per annum, the institute happens to be the most affordable management education institution for aspirants. Although FMS is not included in the NIRF ranking yet it guarantees a good salary package with a meagre investment.

Even the Indian Institute of Technology offers reasonable ROI but only accepts CAT and GMAT for regular two-year MBA programmes. The average fee for top IITs for management studies is INR 10 lakh offering an average salary of INR 13 lakh.

Narsee Monjee Management Admission Test (NMAT)

Difficulty Level: Questions are relatively easier than CAT. This exam has no negative marking. So the chance of scoring well is higher.

Exam Pattern and Number of Attempts: NMAT has a test window of 70 days. It means the examinee can take the exam any day within this period of 70 days. NMAT facilitates the examinee with three attempts including one main attempt and two retakes on the main attempt. The examinee can give tests with a gap of at least 15 days between two attempts. NMIMS, Mumbai (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies) only accepts the score of the first attempt of the exam.

Colleges Accepting NMAT Score: NMIMS Mumbai, K J Somaiya Institute Of Management, TAPMI, etc. accept NMAT scores. All centres of NMIMS are exclusive to the NMAT score.

Return On Investment: NMIMS, Mumbai which ranks 21st on the list of top management institutes as per NIRF offers a median salary of INR 19.20 lakhs per annum. The fee for the two-year regular MBA is INR 23.90 lakhs.

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP)

Difficulty Level: The difficulty level of SNAP is a bit higher than NMAT but is yet lower than CAT. The marking scheme of SNAP requires a balance between speed and accuracy.

Exam Pattern and Number of Attempts: SNAP has over 60 questions to attempt over a period of one hour. SNAP can be also attempted three times for an academic session and the highest of three attempts is considered as the final score. Most of the questions of the test are easy to moderate level.

Colleges Accepting SNAP Score: Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune (SIBM), Symbiosis Centre For Management and Human Resource Development (SCHMRD) and all other Symbiosis campuses only accept the SNAP score. The colleges that are affiliated with Symbiosis International University, Pune only can accept this test score.

Return On Investment: SIBM Pune is the only college on the top list of 50 management colleges as per NIRF.It has a total fee of INR 21.12 lakhs for a regular MBA programme. As per the NIRF 2023 data, the median salary for the graduating batch in 2021 is INR 20.80 lakhs per annum.

Xavier Aptitude Test

Difficulty Level: The difficulty level of XAT is similar to CAT. The major limitation of XAT over other exams is that marks are also deducted for more than eight un-attempted consecutive questions.

Exam Pattern and Number of Attempts: Like CAT, students can only attempt once for one academic session. Students with strong verbal ability have the upper hand in this exam. Decision-making is a section unique to this exam. Extra time is allotted for Part B of the exam which includes general knowledge and essay writing. These sections have no negative markings and their score is included in the overall XAT score.

The marks obtained in the GK section are processed once a student is shortlisted for an interview. The essay section was discontinued in XAT 2019 and will be reintroduced in XAT 2024. The essay section is compulsory for students focusing on XLRI. Decent but accurate attempts are the key to acing this exam.

Colleges Accepting XAT Score: 160 MBA colleges including XLRI, XIMB, IMT, and TAPMI accept XAT scores. The admission in XLRI which ranks ninth on NIRF 2023 for top management institute is exclusive to XAT and GMAT scores.

Return On Investment: The median salary for the management programme as of the academic year 2020-21 is INR 30 lakhs per annum.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test (TISS-NET)

Difficulty Level: The sections of QA and LR-DI are very easy in comparison to all other sections. The make-or-break deal with TISS-NET (Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test) is its general knowledge section. The general knowledge is tough as compared to the general awareness section of all other MBA-entrance exams. Special preparation is needed for this exam.

Exam Pattern and Number of Attempts: TISS-NET has no negative marking. TISS has a sectional cut-off only for the GK section. The other two sections do not have a specific sectional cut-off. Students who have stronger insights about general awareness have higher chances of taking the exam.

Students can take this exam only once an academic year. TISS-NET is a single entrance test for multiple courses offered by TISS across four campuses of TISS. Management aspirants need to clear the cut-off for “Master of Arts in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations” to move forward with their management dream.

Colleges Accepting TISS-NET Score: TISS-NET is accepted by campuses of TISS in Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

Return On Investment: With total fees of INR 1.5 lakhs per annum for Masters in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations, and provides an average package of INR 27.2 lakhs per annum which is quite high.

IIFT

IIFT will be not included in the analysis as IIFT will no longer conduct separate exams it will accept the score of CAT for its admission process.

Choose Your Exam Wisely

Every exam has its own merits and demerits. Students should take the exam whichever suits them. Like CAT is difficult but is accepted by the majority of the premiere schools. Exams like NMAT and SNAP are comparatively easier but only a few colleges on the top 50 list accept this score. The return on investment is average with fees on par with the IIMs.

XAT is again a tough exam and is accepted lesser number of colleges than CAT. TISS-NET has a good return on investment but is only accepted in two colleges. Aspirants have to devise a general awareness-centric strategy to clear TISS-NET. This preparation strategy for the exam is entirely different from other entrance exams. Managing time for exams with different strategies might be challenging for aspirants.

Questions related to CAT

Have a question related to CAT ?

Hello aspirant,
The CAT exam syllabus is not officially prescribed, but it generally includes topics from the following sections:

1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
2. Data interpretation and logical reasoning
3. Quantitative ability

  • Arithmetic

  • Algebra

  • Geometry and Mensuration

  • Number System

  • Modern Math

It seems unlikely that you would be able to get admission in the BTech CS branch at BIT Sindri or Mesra with a CML rank of 2058 and category rank of 433.

Key points:

1. The search results indicate that a CML (Common Merit List) rank of 2058 is quite low for admission to premier engineering colleges like BIT Sindri or NIT Mesra.

2. The cutoff ranks for BTech CS branch at these institutes are usually much higher, often in the range of 1000-2000 for the general category.

3. With a category rank of 433, you may have a better chance of getting admission in the reserved category quota, but the competition is still quite high.

4. The search results do not provide specific cutoff details for BIT Sindri or NIT Mesra, but the general trend suggests your current ranks may not be sufficient for the CS branch in these institutes.

My advice would be to:

1. Check the latest cutoff ranks and admission criteria on the official websites of BIT Sindri and NIT Mesra.

2. Explore other options like state-level engineering colleges or NITs where your current ranks may have a better chance of securing admission.

3. Consider improving your performance in the next attempt of the entrance exam to increase your chances of getting into your desired BTech program.

For VARC, read daily from diverse sources (newspapers, novels, journals) to improve comprehension and vocabulary. Practice RC passages and verbal ability questions regularly. For DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning) and QA (Quantitative Aptitude), solve previous years' papers and take mock tests to identify weak areas. Join a coaching institute or online courses for guidance and stay consistent with your study schedule. Review and analyze your performance in mocks to understand mistakes and improve. Maintain a positive mindset and stay disciplined in your preparation.
