Neeraj V Krishnan, an MBA student at Departement of Management Studies IIT Delhi, completed his internship from HCL Technologies, explains how internship is  a gateway to be a better leader and a manager, and how the professional success mantra lies in your learnings from the professional world

 

In this interview, Neeraj shares experiences on how he developed a holistic understanging of the verticals of HCL, which was his biggest challenge during the internship. He further talks on the importance of doing an internship as part of curriculam learning and industry exposure.

Careers360: Tell us about the company, domain and division in which you completed your summer placement from.

Neeraj: I did my internship from HCL Technologies Ltd, as a part of the Business Marketing team also known as Team 360.

 

Careers360: Were you assigned with any project? Brief us about the timeline and the execution of the project.

Neeraj: Yes, I was assigned with multiple projects. ‘DIA 2015’ and ‘Modernising Justice 2015’ are considered as the World’s largest conferences in the field of Health Care & Life Sciences and Public Services verticals respectively. My key responsibilities included ensuring the timely delivery of various collaterals and creative for the HCL booths from the designers. The timelines for the creative vary from ASAP up to 1 week depending on whether it is a mailer or a brochure. Complete understanding about the conference and HCL’s theme for its booth are essential to convey to the designers what is actually expected by the clients.

 

Careers360: What was your thought process before participating in the summer placements process? Did you focus in any of the domains?

Neeraj: The summer placement process at DMS, IIT Delhi began just after a month of the starting of MBA programme. The management fundamentals had already been strongly engraved in us by our seniors over the intensive induction program. The next step was to prepare a good resume. ‘Put only that you know and know completely what you put in the resume’ is something I followed. Also as I was more inclined towards the marketing domain, I revised the core marketing concepts before the placement process. All these combined with confidence helped me in the summer placement process.

 

Careers360: And, how was the experience during your internship?

Neeraj: It seems I have just completed my internship, and I can tell with complete confidence that the practical learning that I received through hands on experience would definitely make me a better manager. What we learn in the classroom teachings, and what we do practically are poles apart in few of the criteria. Your gateway to be better leader and a manager lies in your learnings from  the professional world, which starts from internship.

 

My internship helped me observe and understand some of the concepts that has been covered in class more holistically.

 

Careers360: How was the environment of the company, the resources, employees and work culture?

Neeraj: ‘Employees First, Customers Second’. The tagline of the company completely explains the excellent working condition and the value that the company gives for each of its employees. Every employee that I have met / interacted in the company were completely friendly, approachable and helpful to me.

 

Careers360: What were the key challenges that you faced during your internship?

Neeraj: The major challenge was to develop a holistic understanding of the Health Care & Life Sciences vertical of HCL within a week of joining the company, so that I may be able to help with the designing of collaterals and creative better. I overcame this challenge by communicating as much as I can, focusing on the sharp outcomes and learnings at each stage.

 

Careers360: Is it important for MBA students to do internship? What values a student can gain?

Neeraj: Yes, I believe that every MBA student should do an internship. This helps the student to understand how the concepts that he/she has learnt in class can be implemented within an organization and how those are helping it serve the customers and employees better.

 

Careers360: While doing your internship, how were you connected with your academic mentor at your institute?

Neeraj: All of us at DMS have all the relevant contact details of our professors, whom we can approach with any doubts round the clock. Also the email is a very effective mechanism to connect with everyone. I was well connceted with my mentors, and share my regular feedbacks and developments with them.

 

Careers360: Share a memorable incident from your internship days.

Neeraj: I was working with the video team that was making a ‘Welcome Video’ for the new joinees. It was a unique experience to witness a live recording session in front of a green screen and understand all the small intricacies that are involved in making a glitch free video. It was also a golden opportunity for me to learn some video editing skills from the expert themselves.
