MAT December 2014 Analysis- Easy to moderate paper with no surprises
The MAT December 2014 Paper Pencil exam has been conducted on Sunday, December 7, 2014. After the conclusion of the paper at 12.30 pm, the test takers analysed the difficulty level of the MAT December 2014 to be easy to moderate. There was no surprise in the exam pattern and followed that of the structure announced by AIMA.
Astha, a candidate from an East Delhi center says, "I would rate the overall difficulty level as Moderate. Compared to CAT, it is a very easy paper. Reasoning was a bit tougher compared to the other sections. The other sections were of moderate difficulty level."

Now let us have a look at the section wise details of MAT 2014 exam. The Analysis is based on last year paper analysis, but it is likely that the MAT December 2014 Analysis will be on similar lines.
This section was a mix of Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability/English Usage. 20 questions are from Reading Comprehension and 20 are from Verbal Ability. The Reading Comprehension area had 5 passages with 4 questions each. The questions were direct and easy in nature. The topics of the English Usage or Verbal Ability sections will as follows:
- Vocabulary – Synonyms & Antonyms, fill in the blanks, jumbled words, odd man out, fill in the blanks
- English Usage and Grammar – Most appropriate restatement, Para Jumbles, Best Essence of the Given Paragraph
The difficulty level of this section is Easy to Moderate.
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
This section will have 30 questions from Analytical Reasoning and 10 questions from Critical Reasoning. While the Analytical Reasoning questions might be easy, the Critical Reasoning questions can be difficult in nature. The overall difficulty level was tougher compared to the other sections.
The topics of the Analytical and Critical Reasoning areas were as follows:
- Analytical Reasoning
- Direction Sense
- Number & Letter Series
- Blood Relation
- Venn Diagrams
- Critical Reasoning
- Assertion & Reasons
- Statement & Conclusion
- Cause & Effect
Data Analysis & Sufficiency
This section was also of easy to moderate section. The questions were broadly from 3 areas, Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency and Data Comparison. DI had 30 questions and DS and DC areas comprise of 10 questions together. The topic wise distributions of the questions were as follows:
- Pie Chart
- Bar Chart
- Line Graph
Data Sufficiency & Data Comparison
- Data Comparison
The section was of moderate to tough difficulty level. The majority of the questions from this section were on Arithmetic. The topics from which the questions came in this section are as follows:
- Time & Work
- Pipes & Cisterns
- Time & Distance
- Boats and Streams
- Averages, Mixtures and Alligations
- Numbers, Equations, Ratio & Proportion, Variation
- Percentages, Profit & Loss, Partnership
- Geometry & Mensuration
- Trigonometry Heights & Distance
- Permutation & Combination
Indian & Global Environment
The questions of this section was based on static GK and current affairs. The difficulty level of the section was moderately difficult. However, the section was quite time consuming. The topics of the questions will be business, personalities and their achievements, politics, geography, history etc.
According to AIMA, the consolidated score is evaluated by taking only 4 sections into account. Indian and Global Environment (GK) is not the part of the consolidated score. Hence, the scoring is done out of a maximum possible score of 160 marks, 1 mark for 160 questions.

I would like you to take some efforts to improve your maths, you can do just my practicing a good number of questions regularly, that's the only way you can improve it. Because maths is the most scoring part to get a good rank and percentile. Just practice regularly , so that it will help you to crack exams. Don't give up just do it:-)

The syllabus of CAT and MAT are similar but not exactly same. Both the exams differ from each other in exam parameters as well as competitive level.
The CAT exam is based on following sections:
Quantitative Aptitude (QA),
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR),
Verbal Ability &Reading Comprehension (VARC)
Whereas MAT exam has following sections :
Indian and Global Environment
Data Analysis and Sufficiency
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
