Issues of Social Concern is a major determinant for IRMA admission- IRMA Director
Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) was established in 1979 with an aim to offer management education, training, research and consultancy support to co-operatives and rural development organisations in India. According to the institute, for more than 3 decades now, management programmes at IRMA remains focused on creating professional managers to work with organisations and partner with people for equitable socio-economic development of rural India.
So, what makes IRMA a unique institution? What personality traits do you need to have to get into this specialized institute of rural management?
In this interview with Careers360.com, IRMA Director Prof Jeemol Unni talks on USPs of IRMA and its unique selection procedure. She also elaborates on what the institute does to ensure a diversified class in terms of academic background of its students. Prof Unni also shares her insight on bringing overall gender diversity in management education.
Interview with Careers360.com:
Careers360.com: How management programmes at IRMA are different from other MBA programmes? What is the USP of the institute?
IRMA Director: IRMA is not a run of the mill Business School. It is a management school with a mission “to promote sustainable, eco-friendly and equitable socio-economic development of rural people through professional management of their institutions and organizations”. Towards this end, IRMA trains professional managers for rural sector and produces cutting edge knowledge on rural issues. IRMA’s Rural Management programme caters to organizations working for rural poor. Therefore, our programme is meant for those students who wish to participate in national building in rural India which has a very high demand for professionals.
Careers360.com: While selecting students, what are the personality traits that you look for in the prospective students?
IRMA Director: IRMA looks to attract and admit students after judging the student’s ability, aptitude, attitude and adaptabilityfor the specialized discipline of Rural Management and to serve the rural sector.
Careers360.com: Generally, majority of an MBA batch at top B-Schools consists of students from engineering background. What is the trend at IRMA?
IRMA Director: While most of the top B-schools admit about 95% students from engineering background, IRMA has only about 56% Engineers in its programme. The rest are from varied disciplines like science, agriculture, humanities, Economics and commerce.
We have designed a unique admission procedure to ensure diversity in disciplines of applicants, essential for working for rural India. IRMA has a separate Written Test on “Issues of Social Concern” which is a major determinant of diversity in first stage admission process. All written testcomponents are considered simultaneouslyto preserve diversity.
Careers360.com: Many MBA aspirants suffer from the dilemma of pursuing MBA from India or abroad. How should they make the decision?
IRMA Director: Students have to make a choice based on their ability, aptitude, interest and adaptability. While the brand value of the educational institution where they obtain a degree is important, the choice should be made based on the where and what kind of organization and sector the candidate wishes serve. Just getting a degree from abroad may not make the candidate suitable for jobs in India and particularly if he is oriented to working for the rural sector. Indian MBA from good institutions is excellent and better suited for jobs in India. Foreign MBA may hold a charm for some students, but with global recessions such students find it difficult to get a job in the Western market and they have lower value in India. So, many MBAs from less known foreign institutions are left high and dry without a job after an expensive education.
Careers360.com: IIMs are bringing significant changes in the admission criteria, in terms of giving less weight to the engineering students and candidates with work experience. What are its implications and what is your take on the same?
IRMA Director: The essential components of the IIM entrance exam CAT will ensure that the applicants and admitted students will be dominated by Engineers. Giving greater weights to non-CAT components such as Xth and XIIth exams would help increase diversity.
Careers360.com: Do you think it is necessary to give extra marks to female students in order have a gender diversified class or selection should be purely based on merit irrespective of the gender of the candidate?
IRMA Director: Maintaining diversity of gender is important. Hence a slightly lower cut off for female candidates would help. The attitude of the Selection Panel at the Admissions interview also would make a difference.
Careers360.com: Are you introducing any change in the curriculum or on any aspect of the flagship programme for the academic session 2014-16? If yes, please share it with us.
IRMA Director: We have recently introduced a new curriculum after a review of the flagship programme in 2012. We will continue with the same curriculum in 2014-16. This year we are conducting our admission through CAT 2013 and the candidates will have to appear for a test on ‘Issues on Social Concern’.
