IIFT 2014: Last Minute and Exam Day Tips
The countdown for the IIFT aspirants has reached its last stage now. This is time to buckle up for the last minute preparation strategies. Also, the practical aspects of the test, such as carrying the important documents and the reporting time to the test center are equally important. Moreover, if your CAT 2014 is scheduled on Saturday, November 22, 2014, then your preparedness for IIFT 2014 exam should be a notch higher. To help you sail through both the important MBA entrance exams, this article of Careers360 will bring to you the last minute preparation strategy and the practical tips for the IIFT 2014 exam day.
Last Minute Preparation Tips for IIFT 2014
Focus on General Awareness – GK is the only section which is not common between IIFT and CAT. Hence, before your IIFT 2014 paper, you must focus on the General Awareness part. IIFT asks typical questions in this section like Business GK, Awards and Accolades etc. If you have already prepared for this section or these question types, brushing up these questions and topics would help you in answering the questions. Sahil Shirbhate, an IIFT 2013 topper shares, “For General Awareness, keep yourself updated about current events through newspapers, general knowledge books and news. The focus should be on business and trade related GK, as it is mostly covered in the IIFT exam.”
Take couple of proctored mock tests – Since the testing mode is different from that of CAT, practice accordingly. Take a couple of IIFT mock tests in paper pencil based format. You will also be able to finalize your time management strategy through the IIFT mock tests. Since shading the circles in the OMR sheet will be more time consuming than clicking the options with mouse, a good practice would be helpful for you to manage the timing for the D Day. “Give mock tests, it will help you to analyze how to divide your time for the exam. Solve your strong areas first,” shares Nilkancha Badhiye, IIFT MBA (IB) student of 2016 batch.
Revise – Revision is key for the last minute preparation of any exam. Go through the formulas, vocabulary, newspapers and GK books for the Quant, Verbal and General Awareness sections respectively. Do not undergo heavy preparation or start new topics at this stage. “Brush up on Current Affairs and Static GK before the exam as it’s important to be strong in the GK section if you want to crack IIFT,” suggests Sunny Pandey, an IIFT 2013 topper.
Strategy to tackle the IIFT 2014 paper
Read the Instructions First – Unlike CAT, IIFT does not declare the number of questions or marking scheme earlier. It is revealed only on the exam day in the Question Paper. So it is advised that you read the instructions carefully before going through the entire question paper and selecting the questions.
Select the questions before starting the paper – Once you go through the instructions and know the section wise number of questions and marking scheme. Select the questions from each section based on the factors like your difficulty level of the question, level of time consumption, marks allotted to the questions among others. “Go through the entire paper once and then start attempting all the easy questions first. Also, try to solve questions uniformly from all sections. Do not swap sections frequently. Let go off questions if they are not solved in the first attempt,” mentions Satyaki Mascharak, an IIFT 2013 topper and first year IIFT Delhi student.
Start with the easy sections – As goes the rule for every exam, start the paper with your most confident sections. It can be either GK or Quant or Verbal Ability. One rudimentary suggestion that is shared by most of the toppers is that, start with the Verbal Ability section first or keep it among your early attempts as Reading Comprehension section is time consuming and it requires your focus and concentration. If you keep it for the later sections, chances are there that you would not be able to answer accurately. “Start with Verbal as it takes up the least time, then moved on to Quants followed by Reasoning, and try to attempt the maximum questions possible in the time allotted. Leave the most difficult questions for the end. The key is not to get stuck with difficult questions and wasting time attempting them,” shares Sahil.
Manage time properly – Do not spend too much time on a particular question. Based on your mock test performance and the sectional marks and cutoffs, the toppers suggest that allot section wise time limits and do not switch sections too often. Sunny Pandey, an IIFT 2013 topper shares a broad plan. He says, “Distribute time for each section strategically. Attempt Verbal section in 5 minutes, complete GA and LR by 25 minutes, and then move to Quants and DI. Finish the exam within the set time frame, so as you are left with few minutes of revision as well.” Satyaki adds, “Do not swap sections frequently. Let go off questions if they are not solved in the first attempt.”
Ensure accuracy – Since IIFT entrance exam includes negative marking scheme, it is very important to maintain accuracy in your performance so that you do not loose marks. Till last year, there was 1/3 negative marking. “Since, IIFT is also emphasizes on speed along with accuracy, I would suggest not to spend more than 1.5 minute on any question,” shares Roshan Tated, another first year student of IIFT Delhi.
Revise after completing – Revision is a must after completing the questions. Check for the accuracy questions. Ensure that you have at least 15 minutes at the end of the exam. In case you could not complete any question during the paper, you may also try to complete it.
Practical Tips for the D Day
Don’t forget your Admit Card – IIFT has sent the Hard Copy of the IIFT 2014 Admit Cards. In case you have not received the Admit Card, you can download it from the official website. Take a print out and bring it to the test center. Preserve it till the end of the admission process.
Documents to bring - IIFT has stated a list of documents to carry which will serve as your identity proves. You have to bring at least 1 of the following documents:
- Election I-Card
- College I-Card
- Driving License
- PAN Card
Bring your stationery items along – IIFT 2014 is a paper pencil based test and for that you have to bring your stationery items along with you. You are allowed to carry pencil, pen and eraser. Apart from that you are not allowed to bring any other personal item with yourself. In case you are carrying books, notebooks, mobile phones, calculators etc. you have to submit them outside your test hall.
Reporting to the test center – The test is scheduled from 10 am to 12 noon and you have to report to the test center at 9 am, 1 hour prior to the test. Late entrants would not be allowed to enter the test center after the scheduled time. It is better to be sure about your test center location well in advance so that you have an idea of the travel time.

what should be my Sectional cutoff in iift exam 2020
This is the sectional cutoff of IIFT exam 2020:
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 18-20
Quantitative Analysis 16-20
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 18-20
General Awareness (GK) 8-10
This sectional cutoff is for Delhi IIFT. So for other IIFTs it will be slightly lower.
Is iift consider your past academics record
- Hey, acccording to my opinion IIFT does not consider your past academics record . iift consider your good percentile WAT,PI and GD scores .if you are clear sectional cutoff and over all cutoff then you are eligible for shortlisted candidates .i think IIFT DELHI AND KOLKATA ARE THE GOOD CAMPUS . I THINK YOU SHOULD SCORES GOOD PERCENTILE THEN ACADEMIC RECORD DOES NOT MATTER FOR YOU FIRST YOU SHOULD GIVE TOTAL FOCUS TOWARD ENTRANCE EXAM.....
3.5 months are enough to crack CAT and IIFT exams ? Can anyone suggest me the study plan ? I am targetting maximum 97% in CAT and 145 marks in IIFT.
Sectional Division of Overall Preparation
Know your strengths along with weaknesses
Accept the importance of previous year question papers
Coaching or self-preparation
If you are preparing for CAT exam on a serious note, there won't be any problem preparing for IIFT too, provided you know the correct strategy for it! only the strategy of how you should play in the required format changes. So is the case with IIFT and other similar entrance exams apart from the CAT.
Firstly, from this year onwards, IIFT is conducted by NTA, so for the first time this year, IIFT will be conducted online just like any other MBA entrance exams! So there are two pros mainly I can think of -
- We don't have to spend our time circling the answers.
- We don't have to separately get accustomed to the paper based format from now.
This exam mainly consists of six sections -
- Reading Comprehension
- Verbal Ability
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Ability
Hope it helps
Thank you & Good Luck!!!
