The 6 month long IIP is a unique initiative of IFIM B- School and has been well taken by the leaders of the Industry. It is the second year of this program and the results and feedback of the last year’s program have been very encouraging. Last year 40% of the students who were part of the IIP got job offers from their Internship companies. In fact many of the senior HR managers were so impressed with the program and the students that this time they have offered stipends as good as salaries the students would draw on the completion of the course. The average stipend offered to the students is Rs 6702 per month and is as high as Rs 20,000 per month for many students.
Mr. Ravi C Dasgupta, VP Group HR, Biocon said, “Biocon first took two interns from the PGDM program of IFIM one year ago. Both were absorbed by us at the end of the internship, so when we approached IFIM this year, we did so with the intent of filling in some permanent positions within the HR team. This year we have taken 5 interns and will be absorbing 3 of them. All the interns have shown a keen desire to learn and contribute. They are also fairly disciplined, well-adjusted and have displayed sound interpersonal skills.”
All the leading companies have realized the value of such an innovative program that allows them to assess the skills and potential of the students before absorbing them. They are treating this program as a new channel of recruitment which offers them the best qualified professional who are able perform, add value and enhance their skills before even joining the company as an employee.
The students had offers from reputed companies like Biocon, Britannia Industries, The Ritz Carlton, 7 Innovation Labs, UB Spirits, Bharti Axa Life Insurance, Toyota Kirloskar, L & T Infotech and Genpact et al. “We found the students from IFIM high in their passion to learn and make a difference at workplace. The interactions have been fruitful and enjoyable. Also, considering the long internship, it would be a good platform for both student and the company to get well acquainted with each other and to see how it can be taken forward in the future”, spoke Santosh Mishra, Director, HR of 7 Innovation Labs.
Majority of the students got internship in the sectors such as IT and ITES (30), FMCG (12), financial services (42) and E- Commerce (15). These were followed by the upcoming sectors like Sports Management and Hospitality and the conventional sectors like Pharmaceuticals and Manufacturing, which picked up 5 students each.
This success has boosted the confidence and morale of the students. “This model of internship is very useful in terms of getting hands on experience in the real world and we get to apply our theoretical knowledge in the company.” said, Shwetha Sumal student at IFIM who was elated to get an Internship at The Ritz Carlton, the world famous chain of hotels who are going to start their operations in India from this year. “This also gives us an edge over the other MBA graduates who have done only summer internships. IFIM has equipped me with good soft skills and presentation skills amongst other management skills which will put me in a better position during the internship.” She added.
Her batch mate and co-intern Anirudh Thackur, was quick to chip in, “IFIM has been an alma mater of my success till date. The courses offered here have been so well designed and up to date that you will get the best of the academics and the industry exposure. The courses are practical and they help you understand the nuances of business. The internship is something that I am eagerly looking forward to so that I can put all my knowledge to best use.” Anirudh feels that he was able to realize his long cherished dream of joining the hospitality industry through this program.
At IFIM the IIP has been included as a key component of the PGDM curriculum. The students undergo the internship at the company’s premises and get full support from the Faculty and the Institute. In addition to the mentor at company all the students have access to a Faculty mentor who helps and guides them in their project. The program is interspersed with regular evaluation and feedback sessions where the faculty and industry mentors work in tandem to extract maximum value from the efforts of the students and see that the learning for them is maximized.
The students of the institute also realize the immense benefits of such a well designed program and are very enthusiastic about it. “The long duration of internship is an excellent model for a fresher to showcase his skills and also a good platform where we have the opportunity to convert this internship into a job. Since it’s a part of our academics, the students will have a more serious approach towards it and will try to give their best to the internship in order to learn more and also to get good grades,” said Saurabh Rai, a student who has got Internship at Britannia Industries.

Why does IFIM now known as JAGSOM?
The institute has been renamed as Jagdish Sheth School of Management (JAGSOM). The ambition to be a globally acclaimed business school from India and the need to be mentored by a person who is an acclaimed global scholar from India was some reasons. Jagdish Sheth, a Padma Bhushan recipient acclaimed globally is a mentor for JAGSOM and we have honoured his work by naming the school after him.
