Excerpts of the chat

Kaveri Bansal: I want to take MBA admission at Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai. Which field do you suggest? I am a computer engineer.
Prof. T N Swaminathan: If you are a fresher, apply to our 2 year PGDM. If you have more than 2 years of experience, apply to our 1 year PGPM program.

Jade: I have heard about Executive MBA and Executive PGDM. Is your Post Graduate Global Executive Program in Management different from them?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: We have an Executive MBA general management and one which is specialized for energy and for top executives, GM and above.

Aakash Aggarwal: What is the minimum work experience required for Executive MBA?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: For our PGXPM, which is the Executive MBA, minimum work experience is 7 to 8 years. Our regular 1 year PGPM needs minimum 2 years experience, it is not an Executive MBA though.

Ragini: What is the cut off for CAT and XAT?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: There is not cut off but admission is dependent on the pool of availability for the year. We accept CAT and XAT scores.

Jade: Sir what is this specialization 'energy'? Can anybody do it?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: No, the Chennai Program GEMBA is for very senior managers who are in energy companies such as Reliance ONGC etc. However there is another 2 year program for freshers in Energy offered in our Gurgaon campus.

Priya: Sir what is the difference between PGP and PGDM as I have more than 2 years of experience, which program I should apply for?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: If you have more than two years, you can apply to our PGPM only that is a 1 year program. You need CAT or GMAT and the last date if Feb 10, 2013.

Sahil: What are the career growth prospects after MBA in Energy?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: Energy sufficiency is a challenging field in India and hence one can see a bright future with the companies in this field in both Public and private sector.

Rebecca: What is the value of executive programs at Great lakes? My preferences are ISB, FMS - does Great Lakes holds any importance?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: Our 1 year program was the second in the country after ISB and our Dean was also the promoter of ISB - if that answers your query. We are among top 10 B-schools in the country.

Priya: Sir What is the CAT percentile cut-off for that and what is the fee?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: The safe bet is 90 percentile. Fee for 1 year is approximately Rs. 12 lakh.

Jade: Is MBA (Energy) AICTE approved? Does it matter?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: Our Gurgaon program is not yet AICTE approved but industry has accepted it.

Jade: Does it matter if a program is AICTE approved?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: While AICTE is an additional benefit, so long as Industry accepts, there is not much of a problem if you do not wish to Pursue a PhD or Academic job in India. However you can go abroad for PhD.

Rebbecca: I am from Mumbai. Do you have hostel accommodation sir? Can you elaborate about facilities for residential students.
Prof. T N Swaminathan: It is compulsory residential campus with Individual Air-conditioned rooms. We also have a facility for the spouse in case of married Students.

Priya: What was the placement of PGPM last year and how many were placed? And what was the highest package?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: PGPM Placement is going on and so far approximately 65 % of the batch is placed. Highest package is Rs. 26 Lakh per annum.

Kaveri: Does your institute offer MBA in Entrepreneurship?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: As of now there is no Entrepreneurship specialization, but we have set up centre for Entrepreneurship and that will be functional soon which will give you incubation opportunities.

Jade: Sir how much salary can I earn after doing MBA (Energy)?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: It should be anywhere upwards of Rs. 7.5 lakh depending on your profile.

Priya: During PGP, does student get the chance to get other countries through student exchange programmes?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: Yes in PGDM we have signed a few. In PGPM difficult considering it is 1 year but you can go to partner Universities for 1 semester after the program and get a US MBA.

Anusha: What is the North Indian student’s ratio in your Chennai campus?
Prof. T N Swaminathan: Our Chennai campus has 32% students from North India, 30% from West. Official language in campus is Hindi.
