CAT Result 2019 - Normalization Process

Since the test is a computer-based one held in two sessions, normalization is used to ensure equivalence. The official CAT 2019 normalization procedure is as follows:

  • Normalization process is first done across different forms to adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions.
  • After this, the obtained scores will be further normalized across different sections to calculate scaled scores.
  • Next, these scaled scores will be converted into percentiles for shortlisting.
  • The scaled scores of the three sections are added to get the total scaled scores and thereafter the percentiles published in result of CAT 2019

Calculation of CAT 2019 Scaled Score of a candidate

The following steps are used to calculate the scaled score of a section mentioned in CAT result 2019. Here the QA section is used as an example.

Step 1: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in the morning session.
Let Mean = M1 and SD = S1 and G1 = M1 + S1.

Step 2: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in the afternoon session.
Let Mean = M2 and SD = S2 and G2 = M2 + S2.

Step 3: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in CAT 2019 (both morning and afternoon sessions).
Let Mean = M and SD = S and G = M + S.

Step 4: Calculate mean raw score in QA section of the top 0.1% candidates in the morning session and denote it by 𝑀1 0.1.

Step 5: Calculate mean raw score in QA of top 0.1% candidates in the afternoon session and denote it by 𝑀2 0.1.

Step 6: Calculate the mean raw score in QA of top 0.1% candidates appearing in CAT (both morning and afternoon session) and denote it by 𝑀0.1.

Example:
CAT-2019-scaled-score-example

This will be the process to be followed for all the three sections - QA, VARC and DILR.
The total scaled score = Sum of scaled scores of QA, VARC and DILR.

How to calculate CAT Percentile 2019?

Scaled score are used to calculate the percentiles. Here, the QA section has been taken as an example. The procedure for VARC and DILR as well as total percentile is also the same. The process is as given below

Step 1: Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT (both morning and afternoon sessions).

Step 2: A rank (r), will be assigned on the basis of the scaled scores obtained in the QA section to all candidates who appeared for the exam. If two or more candidates obtain identical scaled scores in the QA section, identical ranks will be assigned to them. For example if two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then both these candidates will be assigned a rank of 1. Next the candidate(s) obtaining the second highest scaled score in the QA section will be assigned a rank of 3 and so on.
Step 3: Calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section as given below:
CAT-2019-percentile-calculationStep 4: Round off the calculated percentile score (P) of a candidate up to two decimal points.

For example, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 will be rounded off to 100. Similarly all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 will be rounded off to 99.99 and so on.
