CAT 2016 paper of the afternoon session was leaked on social media platform Facebook while the exam was still on for the second session. The question snapshots taken by a mobile camera appeared on Facebook at around 3.09 PM, just half-an-hour after the exam started for the slot. Later it also appeared on WhatsApp and other platforms.
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) which conducts the test, though, admitted to the leak, it said that “the malpractice that was promptly detected and has been dealt with by initiating the due procedure of law”.
In an official notification immediately after the CAT 2016 exam, IIMs said, “There was one incident of malpractice that was promptly detected and has been dealt with by initiating the due procedure of law.” The IIMs added that “the incident has in no manner compromised the integrity of the test and CAT administration requests you not to pay any heed to rumours or insinuations in this regard.”

However, CAT experts suggest that the incident is actually a paper leak and exam conduction authorities must investigate into it. The experts believe the leakage of questions may have helped a few students get the right answers through the same route they sent the questions outside the exam hall.
“Now, this leak, if it were one, has two possibilities. The first is that a test-taker transmitted some of the questions outside the exam hall just to show his/her abilities to beat the system. The second is that a student sent these questions out to some contact of his/her with an objective of getting answers to the questions that he/she wanted to answer. Of course, the answers could come into the exam hall through the same route that the questions went out,” believe experts from T.I.M.E. coaching institute.
Last time the CAT paper leaked was in 2003. The year witnessed a re-testing where the entire exam process had to be taken afresh.
After the reported leak, students and experts are demanding a thorough investigation and a re-test for the second slot of the CAT paper. “Students are obviously concerned about this leak and how it will affect their selection chances. The IIMs will need to investigate what exactly happened – they should do it on topmost priority,” experts from T.I.M.E. suggested.
