CAT 2015: Engineers give thumbs up to MBA option; only 5 per cent skip CAT in 2015 Vs 15 per cent in 2014
While IIMs introduced changes in CAT 2015 pattern to bring academic diversity in IIM campuses, the dynamics of test takers has now brought them a reversed proposition. IIM strategy was to get more non-engineers on board this year, but despite their efforts, engineers are set to increase their dominance in IIM classrooms in 2016.

According to CAT 2015 applicant data available with Careers360, while non-engineers ducked CAT 2015 with 30 per cent of them skipping the November 29 test, participation of engineer applicants in CAT 2015 increased significantly despite their number being lesser than last year in the overall application pool.
As per CAT 2015 Convenor Prof. Tathagata Bandyopadhyay, a total of 1,12,012 engineering applicants took the November 29 test out of the total 1,18,079 registered candidates with engineering background. Interestingly, compared to CAT 2014, a total of 6,664 more candidates with Engineering background took the test this year despite their number in the overall application pool being lesser by about 6,000 than last year.
Thus, engineers participated in CAT 2015 exam enthusiastically with 95 per cent of them appearing for the November 29 test. Last year, only 85 per cent of engineering applicants had actually appeared for the test. On the other hand, participation from non-engineering applicants was tad lower with only 70 per cent of them taking the prestigious MBA entrance exam.

This year, IIM Ahmedabad, which conducted CAT on behalf of all IIMs, had introduced massive changes in the CAT pattern to make it more convenient for candidates from non-engineering background. The CAT 2015 pattern changes included introduction of on-screen calculator and Non-MCQs which did not carry negative marking.
The changes introduced for CAT 2015 pattern had subtly encouraged non-engineers to apply for CAT and this actually led to a significant increase of 11 per cent in overall CAT applications and also a 6-year record high with a total of 2,18,664 applications.
This increase in application pool was largely attributed to non-engineering applicants. As compared to 2014, as much as 38 per cent more non-engineers had registered for CAT 2015, thus taking their share up by 9 per cent in the overall application pool. However, the number of non-engineer applicants did not convert into test takers, putting a question mark on the ‘academic diversity’ that IIMs proposed in their classrooms.
CAT 2015 was held in a single-day window on Sunday, November 29, 2015 in 2 slots.
