CAT 2015 Analysis Slot 2 - Alike Slot 1 Paper with tough DI & LR
The second slot of CAT 2015, the biggest national level MBA entrance exam for admissions to IIMs and top B-schools, concluded at 5:30 pm on Sunday with over 1 lakh CAT takers appearing for the coveted entrance test across test centres in India. As per the CAT 2015 candidates who appeared for the Slot 2, the overall difficulty level of the exam was Moderate to Tough. The coveted entrance exam for MBA 2016 Admissions followed the changed pattern which had been introduced this year itself.

Let us have a look at the CAT 2015 exam pattern, before checking detailed analysis–The paper carried around 20-25% non-MCQs spread among three sections of the paper. As expected, candidates did also get on-screen calculator which made their calculation easier and helped them save time for attempts to more questions.

Each question carried 3 marks and there was negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. However, for the non-MCQ (questions which did not have any choices to mark), there was no negative marking.
Let us now have a look at the detailed section wise CAT 2015 Analysis Slot 2.
According to the students and experts, the DI & LR sections were tough, while Quant and Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VRC) sections were easily manageable. CAT 2015 Slot 2 examinee at a Delhi Centre, Smriti, says, “CAT 2015 was a tough one in terms of difficulty level, where QA was the toughest and DI & LR was somewhat tough. However, VRC was the easiest of all the sections. Time-limit was sufficient for VRC but I faced shortage of time in solving DI & LR sections.”
Quantitative Ability – This section had 34 questions with a time-limit of 1 hour. The sectional difficulty level for this section has been marked as moderate. There were as many as 15 MCQs in the section. The first-time on-screen calculator played an important role for the test takers in this section. Nishta, one of the test takers of CAT 2015 Slot 2 said, “The paper was moderate for me where I could solve the questions in given time slot and the calci was quite useful, however, I needed mouse to function it.” Some test takers, however, said they did not use it as they were not familiar with its usages. The main topics from which the questions were asked included Permutation Combination, and Progression besides Arithmetic, Number System, Geometry, and Algebra.
Verbal and Reading Comprehension – Likewise Slot 1 paper, this section was considered to be the easiest among three sections by candidates as well as experts. The section had more number of Reading Comprehension passages. Moreover, as many as 10 questions were of non-MCQs type comprising majority of questions from Para-Jumbles, Odd-man out and selecting summary.
Sachin Mittal, one of the other CAT 2015 candidates said, “VRC was easiest of all the sections, where several questions from Comprehension Passages.”
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning – The total number of questions in this section was 32. There were 16 questions each in DI and LR areas respectively. Overall difficulty level of the section was moderate to tough alike Slot 1 paper.
The DI questions comprised various questions including Bar Graph, Pie Chart, Line-Graph etc. The questions in this area were time consuming, tricky and calculation intensive.
On the other hand, the logical reasoning questions were tougher ones. The LR sections were on the topics like Arrangement, Combination, Venn Diagrams, Family Tree, etc.
Surabhi, one of the other test-takers said, “DI was the toughest of all sections, where QA had the toughest questions having more number of non-MCQs. The paper was overall moderate.”
Overall Summary – CAT 2015 Slot 2 ended at 5:30 pm as scheduled. It was a moderate to tough paper for the CAT aspirants, as majority of them at many of the test centres (which Careers360 covered) were seen in relief. Most of the CAT 2015 Slot 2 examinees said that the changes in pattern turned including sectional time limit and introduction of calculator turned out to be advantageous.
CAT 2015 has been registered by as many as 218664 candidates. The second slot is scheduled from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM.
