CAT 2015: 84 per cent non-engineers amongst 39,000 candidates skipping test; IIM-A strategy on academic diversity falls flat
IIM-A strategy to bring more academic diversity at IIM campuses has fallen flat with CAT test data showing that about one-third of non-engineer applicants skipped the November 29 exam despite applying for the same. The CAT-takers’ data available with Careers360, reveals that that non-engineers constituted about 84 per cent of the total 39,062 candidates who did not take the exam on November 29.

According to CAT 2015 officials, only 67,590 non-engineers appeared for the CAT exam out of a total of 1,00,585 registered non-engineering candidates. Thus, about 30 per cent of the total non-engineer applicants did not take the exam. On the other hand, engineer candidates were quite impressive with about 95 per cent of them taking the November 29 test.
Careers360 has already reported that over 39,000 candidates skipped CAT 2015 test held on November 29.

IIM strategy on increasing academic diversity falls flat:
The surprising number of non-engineer applicants skipping the test also comes as embarrassment for IIMs which had introduced many changes to make the test ‘more inclusive’.
This year, IIM Ahmedabad, which conducted CAT on behalf of all IIMs, had introduced massive changes in the CAT pattern to make it more convenient for candidates from non-engineering background. The changes included introduction of on-screen calculator and Non-MCQs which did not carry negative marking.
Subsequently, CAT 2015 Convenor Prof. Tathagata Bandyopadhyay had also claimed that pattern change and rationalization of CAT 2015 question paper was aimed at bringing more academic diversity in the IIMs, which traditionally get more engineer applicants. “We believe the new exam pattern will help us identify candidates from varied backgrounds who will become future leaders in their chosen profession. Such a move will also help IIMs bring in greater diversity in the classrooms and will go a long way in enriching the learning experience,” he had stated after announcing the change in the exam pattern of CAT 2015.
The changes introduced for CAT 2015 pattern subtly encouraged non-engineers and this actually led to a significant increase of 11 per cent in overall CAT applications and also a 6-year record high with a total of 2,18,664 applications.
This increase in application pool was attributed to large number of non-engineering applicants. As compared to 2014, as much as 38 per cent more non-engineers registered for CAT 2015, thus taking their share up by 9 per cent in the overall application pool.
However, the number of non-engineer applicants did not convert into test takers, putting a question mark on the ‘academic diversity’ that IIMs wish in their classrooms.
CAT 2015 was held in a single-day window on Sunday, November 29, 2015 in 2 slots.
