With more candidates applying for CAT on special one-day registration window on October 10, CAT 2014 Convenor Dr Rohit Kapoor confirmed that the CAT registration number has crossed last year’s mark now. “About 7000 candidates registered for CAT on October 10. With the new applications, the number of CAT registration has gone up to 1,96,915 now,” he said.

CAT is the gateway to all 19 Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and many other top B-schools.

Special registration day rescues CAT numbers:

With the new CAT 2014 registration number, the number of candidates applying for the exam has grown marginally as compared to 2013. A total of 1,94, 514 candidates had registered for CAT in 2013. Thus, CAT registration is up by more than 2000 this year.

The marginal increase in numbers, however, reverse the past few years trend where CAT registrations were dipping consistently barring a few occasions.

The number of CAT 2013 registration had already dipped to a record low  with only 1.95 lakh candidates filling application for the exam in 2013 as compared to 2.14 lakh applicants in 2012.  The actual number of test takers had further fallen with only 1.74 lakh candidates appearing for the test in 2013.

In the year 2008, around 2, 90,000 candidates had registered for the prestigious MBA entrance exam. Since then the number has dipped barring a few exception where it showed signs of revival.

Is it possible for me to get into anyone of the IIMs if I have completed my bachelors degree from a tier 3 college with 85% & have 76% in 10th, 53% in 12th & no work experience?

Manisha Gupta Expert 31st Mar, 2020

Hello Aspirant,

You have an average Academic record so you need to target a little higher percentile than the closing cut-off.

After CAT result, Every Institute including IIM prepares a merit list to call students for next round of interview and WSAT which is based on your aggregate score which comprises of many factors such as CAT marks,
10th 12th and graduation percentage, work experience etc. with different weightages for different IIMs.

If you are targeting to get top IIMs like IIM A, B, C then try to score more than 99 percentile and for new IIMs try to score 95 percentile in CAT Entrance Exam. Other than IIMs, To get into top private colleges like FMS, JBIMS Mumbai, S.P Jain etc. You should have more than 96-98 percentile other than this for other private colleges you can get with 90+ percentile in CAT Entrance Exam.

Good Luck!

Prepare for the syllabus according to the weight age of each section.  Give mock tests and improve upon your timing skills. if you join a coaching class it would be good as you will get a clearer idea.
