CAT 2014: Inconvenient exam-centre, exam-day hit applicants
The change is not good. This is what many potential CAT takers are telling ever since they downloaded their CAT admit card for the exam scheduled on two days – November 16 and November 22.
As IIM Indore issued CAT 2014 admit card to IIM aspirants, many applicants found that the changes in CAT process this year has really hit them hard. With the changes introduced in CAT process this year, IIM-Indore, which is conducting CAT 2014 on behalf of all 19 IIMs, has allotted exam centres to one of the three choices that applicants made in their CAT application form this year. Also, the exam-date was randomly allocated to the candidates, making it difficult for many potential CAT-takers to appear for the exam.

Such random allotment of CAT exam-day has especially worried many candidates who were also planning to take IIFT entrance exam schedule on November 23, just a day after CAT day 2 exam. CAT Centre allotment of second or third preference has added to their worries as they would now have to appear for the two top B-school Exams - IIFT Entrance and CAT, back to back in different cities.
Many IIFT aspirants luckily got November 16 exam day of CAT, bringing them a gap of 7 days for their IIFT exam, but it was not the same for all.
Aakriti Sharma, who had applied for both IIFT and CAT this year, now finds it extremely difficult to appear for both as her CAT centre is in Udaipur on November 22 and IIFT exam is on November 23 in Delhi. She is still undecided which exam to appear for as she wanted to keep both of her options for IIM and IIFT open till the end result.
“I have been preparing for both the exams since last six months. Though I am more interested in IIFT, I wanted to keep my options open for IIM also. But travelling back from Udaipur to Delhi and appearing for the exam very next day might not be a feasible idea for me now,” she said ruing the fact that she may have now to choose one of the two exam options.
Aakriti lives in Delhi and she had planned to appear for both CAT and IIFT assuming that she will be able to sit for both the exam back to back.
For past few years, CAT exam centres and exam dates would be allocated mostly on candidates’ choice of exam centres and exam dates, thanks to the practice of long exam windows of two to three weeks in for last five years. Candidates were also given different options for test dates and test centres if his first preference was not available.
Similarly, Rahul, another CAT aspirant, completed his CAT application well before the deadline. He listed New Delhi as her first preferred test city, but instead got allotted another city for 22 November exam day. He now mulling to skip CAT and focusing on IIFT entrance only.
“I have been preparing for CAT 2014 for last 5-6 months along with my hectic work schedule. I successfully filled the application form way before the deadline of September 30, as I didn’t want to miss this year’s CAT exam. But I have been allotted a test center outside Delhi. Since, I also plan to appear for IIFT entrance exam dated November 23, just the next day of my CAT 2014, it would be impossible for me to travel back to Delhi and appear for the test. I didn’t get my first preferred city for appearing in the exam, and I now plan to skip this year’s CAT exam,” Rahul says.
How CAT centre and exam day selection process changed?
Before the new process in 2014, the previous CAT registration process was more apt and seemed easy for the students, as they were able to select the complete slots according to their preferences.
This year, CAT applicants, while filling their application form had to select their 3 Test City preferences. Last year, candidates were allowed to choose among available exam-centre options.
Earlier, potential CAT takers were also allowed to select test dates in long exam window of two-three weeks, but this year the exam dates were allocated randomly by IIMs either on 16 November or 22 November.
The selection of the date and test centre completely depended on the availability of the same. If a particular test centre was already 100% registered for a particular slots, candidates had to select a different test center and slot respectively on the spot.
Key changes for CAT 2014:
Compared to last year, CAT 2014 came with major changes in exam process and pattern.
Since the year 2009, when CAT became computer based from the traditional paper pencil format, the test was generally conducted over a window of 20 days starting in October and ending in November. According to the CAT 2014notification, the exam is scheduled for 2 days within a week, which are Sunday, November 16, 2014 and Saturday, November 22, 2014.
Besides the above said changes, another change in the CAT 2014 list includes the CAT notification about Admit card. Compared to last year, this year onwards the CAT Admit Card were not sent to registered e-mail id’s, rather aspirants had to wait for the official notifications of the release of the Admit cards. The admit card were made available for download from the official website.
