CAT 2013 Results: Pressure mounts on IIM-Indore ahead of March 7 HC deadline on CAT notice
With thousands of MBA aspirants eagerly awaiting IIMs’ response to Madhya Pradesh High Court notice on CAT 2013 results, pressure mounted on IIM-Indore for specific answers on different aspects of CAT results including revelation of raw scores even as many other IIMs’ also appeared to be relying on the response of IIM-Indore to deal with the court notice.
As the court has subjected the final admission to all IIM to the outcome of the writ petition and sought response from all IIMs’ on specific concerns on CAT results by March 7, 2014, CAT convening body at IIM-Indore will also need to defend the ongoing admission process at other IIMs.
The IIM-Indore, which has so far refused to share raw CAT scores saying revelation of the same may result in “significant confusion”, may also need to help other IIMs in responding to the HC notice.
“The raw scores are simply an interim step toward the production of calibrated scale scores, revelation of which would be misleading and result in significant confusion,” the institute had shared in its reply to an RTI application on raw scores. The court, however, has asked IIM-Indore to share its response to the specific concerns of CAT takers who alleged that normalization process adopted by IIMs’ was non-transparent and sought raw CAT scores.
Buck passed to IIM-Indore
Meanwhile, many IIM directors, whom Careers360 spoke on HC notice, acknowledged the receipt of HC Notice and said they will be responding to the court in consultation with IIM-Indore which had conducted CAT 2013 on behalf of all 13 IIMs.
“CAT is a joint exam conducted by all 13 IIMs. So, we all own it. But Since IIM Indore has conducted CAT 2013 on behalf of all 13 IIMs’, we will be responding to court notice in consultation with the CAT 2013 convening IIM which is IIM-Indore,” said Dr Devi Singh, Director, IIM-Lucknow.
IIM Rohtak Director Dr P Rameshan though said that his institute is yet to receive any such notice, but he said that any response to the court will be aligned with CAT 2013 convening body at IIM-Indore.
Another IIM Director said that such court notices are responded through proper channel which presently will be routed through IIM-Indore.
Earlier, CAT takers had also filed RTI applications to MHRD seeking information on their raw score and rationale behind normalization process for CAT scores evaluation. MHRD, however, shared no information and asked IIM Indore to take appropriate action on RTI applications.
IIM Indore had conducted CAT 2013 on behalf of all 13 IIMs’ with Prometric being their testing partner for the computer based testing process.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court intervened into IIM Admission Process after a group of CAT 2013 takers, disgruntled over their CAT 2013 results, had approached the Indore HC seeking its direction over release of CAT 2013 raw scores and transparency over normalization process of CAT scores. The HC issued notice after the petitioners argued that since all the IIMs have already announced their shortlist and they are conducting the second stage of selection process also, it may be too late to wait for their reply on RTI any longer.
The MP High Court, however, did not grant any interim relief to the petitioners. This, according to experts, means that the ongoing admission process may continue as scheduled unless directed otherwise by the court on March 7, 2014. The HC also allowed petitioners to personally serve the notice copy to all the respondents including all 13 IIMs, CAT 2013 Committee, Government of India, and CAT 2013 testing agency Prometric.
Careers360 had written an open letter to CAT 2013 Convenor Dr Rohit Kapoor of Indian Institute of Management Indore seeking his response on specific issues related to transparency in CAT examination and evaluation process for the same. But IIM Indore is yet to respond to this. Earlier, Careers360 had reported on 95000+ candidates scoring zero or less in CAT 2013 and the concerns on CAT evaluation process. Career360 analysis of actual score cards of the CAT takers had revealed that Verbal Ability section may have played foul with the dreams and aspirations of many students.
Different Indian Institutes of Management have released their shortlist for second stage of admission process. Many IIMs’ have already begun next stages of their selection process that includes combination of different components like GD, PI and WAT.
The IIMs’ have altogether shortlisted about 15,000 candidates for the next round of selection process, against the total of 3335 seats this year (with the addition of 115 seats added this year).
The CAT 2013 results were announced on January 14. The Common Admission Test (CAT) is conducted annually for admission to management programmes to all 13 Indian Institute of Management. The CAT scores are also accepted by many other top B-schools across India.
Many CAT 2013 applicants have raised question on the authenticity of their scorecards and demanded more transparency on overall CAT process starting from testing to declaration of results. Thousands of students have signed an online petition after allegedly finding discrepancy in their CAT scorecard.
