CAT 2013 results: Has Verbal Ability played foul? Know how CAT 2013 scaled score changed into percentile!
Careers360 had reported on 95000+ candidates scoring zero or less in CAT 2013 and the concerns on CAT evaluation process. We have now analyzed the actual score cards of the CAT takers which reveals that Verbal Ability section may have played foul with the dreams and aspirations of many students.
Some CAT 2013 takers are demanding re-evaluation of CAT 2013 results. IIM authorities and CAT testing agency Prometric, however, are yet to respond to our queries on the same. Careers360 brings to you an analysis of 200+ score cards:
The analysis of over 200 actual CAT scores available with Careers360, reveal that most of the students have failed to score in Verbal Ability section and that has caused their overall low percentile.
Is something really wrong with Verbal Ability (VA) section?
The score card of a CAT taker below shows that the candidate has 91.86 percentile in QA but his VA percentile is only 0.57. This resulted in his overall percentile dipping to 33.06 percentile.
*Note: Common Admission Test (CAT) carries two sections (Quantitative Aptitude & Verbal Ability) of 30 questions each. Candidates get 70 minutes for each section separately. A right answer carries 3 positive marks and a wrong question reduces the total score by 1 marks. The Indian Institute of Management, however, maintains that they follow a standard procedure for CAT evaluation which is internationally accepted.
Further, the analysis of this random 200 data reveals that many candidates who have been put in 90 percentile bracket in Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section failed to score even zero in VA section. The candidates feel that despite scoring high in Quantitative Aptitude section, the low scores in Verbal Ability have ruined their chances into a good B-school.
As many as 8 score cards of CAT 2013 available with us show that the candidates have 98-99 percentile in Quantitative Aptitude, but they scored zero or less in Verbal Ability section shown in the table below:
“My scores in VA are something I can in no way digest , on my worst of days I should have scored a 90%ile in VA , this 75 has ensured I end up with no calls,” said a CAT taker who had scored 99.77 percentile in QA but scored abysmally low in VA (75.58).
A total of 1.74 lakh candidates had appeared for CAT 2013. The CAT 2013 Results, however, shows that 95000 of those appearing for CAT either scored zero marks or obtained overall negative marks. The score cards released by IIMs on January 14 shows that the candidate who did not even answer any of the questions in the CAT 2013 paper, scored around 55 percentile.
Candidates demand re-evaluation
After CAT takers found discrepancy in their CAT 2013 scores, many students are demanding re-evaluation of their raw scores.
“My results show shocking score in VA. I attempted at least 21-22 questions in the section, and did not make any guess.VA proved to be the score maximizers in other exams. Just can’t believe this score,” said a CAT 2013 candidates who blamed the evaluation process for dragging down his overall score to 81 percentile despite a decent performance in QA (92) percentile. He scored near zero in VA.
CAT 2013 taker Abhishek Leel who left his job a year back to prepare for CAT, was shocked to find that his overall score is almost null despite having a decent performance in QA. He was put at overall 58 percentile despite being in 90 percentile in QA. His Cat 2013 score showed his VA percentile as 18.04. He was expecting a call from a top B-school after his CAT paper but he believes that his MBA dream has been crushed by IIM evaluation process. “I am increasingly frustrated after looking at my score card. The hidden IIM evaluation process has crushed my dream for a good B-school. I want a re-evaluation of my CAT paper and I may take legal recourse to get my row scores,” he said. The candidate has now filed an online petition after finding his score abysmally low in VA.
A student referring to a media report of 2009 said that Prometric had allowed candidates to cross-check their score after CAT takers had demanded transparency on the results that year.
“If they can allow students to cross check their actual score in a particular year, what is wrong if they do the same again to stop this confusion,” asked a CAT 2013 taker.
As CAT takers have shared with us their actual score cards, Careers360 brings you actual data driven graph to show how your CAT 2013 performance has changed into scaled score and then to the percentile. On the basis of scaled score and respective percentile of 25 students we bring you a projection on how your CAT 2013 scaled scores would have converted into your actual percentile mentioned in your score cards.

With a GOOD PERCENTILE IN CAT , TOEFL and ACCA with correspondence B.sc Accounting degree from OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY and B.Com from University of Madras (distance education) will I stand a good chance in LIBA? I do not have a regular stream Bachelors degree.
There is high possibility that you might get admission into LIBA. But nothing can be told with complete assurance. The best way to find out is that you should try contacting the college authorities and get your query answered directly by them.
You can open the official website of LIBA and there will be a pop up box for help there you can ask your query and provide your contact details and wait for their reply and then you can be sure about it also.
Hope this helps!! :-)
