Though all 13 IIMs’ continued with their schedule process for admission, the Madras HC order staying admission on 8 IIM seats until the final outcome of writ petition may force different IIMs’ to put their final admission list on hold.
Despite all 13 IIMs’ having separate process of admission conducted independently by each of them except a Common Admission Test, all the IIMs’ will now have to identify the 8 seats from their combined capacity of 3335 seats, before finalizing their admission list. Further, the continuing petitions on the same matter in different high courts may result in similar orders for different group of petitioners and haunt the ongoing admission process at different IIMs’.
The IIMs’ have altogether shortlisted about 15,000 candidates for the next round of selection process, against the total of 3335 seats this year (with the addition of 115 seats added this year).
CAT 2013 takers resort to legal remedies:
Madhya Pradesh High Court has already issued notice to all IIMs’, CAT 2013 convening body, CAT testing agency Prometric and Government of India and subjected the final admission to all IIM to the outcome of a similar writ petition. The MP HC has sought response from all IIMs’ on specific concerns on CAT results by March 7, 2014. The HC issued notice after the petitioners argued that since all the IIMs have already announced their shortlist and they are conducting the second stage of selection process also, it may be too late to wait for their reply on RTI any longer.
Two separate groups of CAT 2013 takers have filed petitions in Calcutta High Court and Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court also. Many other groups of disgruntled CAT takers are also planning to approach High Court in their respective home state.
Thousands of CAT 2013 takers have alleged discrepancy in their results and sought court intervention into the ongoing IIM admission process after CAT 2013 convening body at IIM Indore refused to share CAT raw scores and evaluation process methodology citing different reasons including ‘commercial interest of its testing partner’. IIM Indore which conducted Common Admission Test (CAT) on behalf of all 13 IIMs with Prometric being its testing partner, also refused to share answer keys and raw scores for the candidates saying revelation of the same may create ‘significant confusion’.
All eyes on IIM-Indore
With thousands of CAT 2013 candidates seeking re-evaluation of CAT 2013 scores, pressure mounted on IIM-Indore for specific answers on different aspects of CAT results including revelation of raw scores even as many other IIMs’ also appeared to be relying on the response of IIM-Indore to deal with the court notice. Meanwhile, many IIM directors, whom Careers360 spoke on MP HC notice, acknowledged the receipt of HC Notice and said they will be responding to the court in consultation with IIM-Indore which had conducted CAT 2013 on behalf of all 13 IIMs.
MHRD had already directed RTI applications seeking information on raw CAT score and rationale behind normalization process for CAT scores evaluation to IIM-Indore and asked it to take appropriate action on RTI applications.
Careers360 had written an open letter to CAT 2013 Convenor Dr Rohit Kapoor of Indian Institute of Management Indore seeking his response on transparency in CAT examination and its evaluation process. But IIM Indore is yet to respond to this. Earlier, Careers360 had reported on 95000+ candidates scoring zero or less in CAT 2013 and the concerns on CAT evaluation process. Career360 analysis of actual score cards of the CAT takers had revealed that Verbal Ability section may have played foul with the dreams and aspirations of many students.
Many CAT 2013 applicants have raised question on the authenticity of their scorecards and demanded more transparency on overall CAT process starting from testing to declaration of results. Thousands of students have signed an online petition after allegedly finding discrepancy in their CAT scorecard.
They have formed a social media platform on Facebook to plan and communicate on pan-India activities on the CAT 2013 result related court proceedings. The candidates have also centralized the donation process for the legal expenses by launching a website for the same.

CAT is a National level Common Admission Test to get admission in IIM's and Some Business Schools to pursue Post Graduation in Management i,e PGDM/MBA. XAT is also another National level exam Conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur for admission to MBA/PGDM Course. Some Business Schools offers CAT and some other XAT. I suggest you to apply CAT exam because you can get admission in IIM's through CAT but not XAT. If you have written Same exams, and the College accepts both you can apply through only One particular exam Score which is better.
