Dr. Pratima Sheorey, Director, Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development (SCMHRD) Pune in an interactive interview with Careers360 talks about the thrust that is being laid by the institute on “smart study” and developing curriculum which is in accordance with the changing trends of the industry.
Dr. Sheorey also spoke about the specialised courses that are being offered by the institute and the challenges that are being faced currently by management education such as proliferation of B-schools, quality of education among others.

Careers360: What are the new changes that you plan to bring in your curriculum/system in next two years?
Dr. Sheorey: Some of the changes we plan to bring about are:
We revise the curriculum every year and formulate it according to the latest industry trends and requirements. In lieu of the above, we have incorporated research work within the framework of the curriculum. Every student is assigned a research guide and engages in at least one Live Project apart from over and above the research project and summer internship.
We are collaborating with international universities like Berlin School of Economics, Telecom Ecole De Management, ESC Rennes, France etc. for student and faculty exchange programmes. These collaborations help students to develop a global perspective and understanding.
Introduction of various interactive online study platforms like HBS, Connect Plus, SmartBook, EuroMonitor, Science Direct and Bloomberg has led to interactive and up to date knowledge delivery system with an in built constant evaluation procedure.
Careers360: SCMHRD offers specialised MBA programmes ion Business Analytics. Please share the significance and relevance of the programmes in today’s time.
Dr. Sheorey: The increasing availability of data means that management decisions can be backed up with solid analytical facts. Tools that were once exclusive for statisticians are now increasingly available to dissect and explore data to expose patterns that are invaluable in decision making.
The courses in the MBA Analytics program are designed with active participation by people from industry working with Analytics and Big Data. In addition, all courses are taught by the people from in the industry who helped to design the courses from a holistic perspective. The courses are developed and taught in a way that will enable students to understand give the interplay between Marketing, Risk, Operations, HR, and Finance.
Students get hands on experience learning about how these processes are interlinked.
Careers360: How has been the application trend at your institute over the past 2-3 years? Please share data, if any.

Careers360: Do you plan to increase intake and fee for the upcoming batch at SCMHRD?
Dr. Sheorey: For 2016 academic year The total intake for admission year 2016 is 275 students under which cover five specialisations- HR, Marketing, Finance, Operations and IM were admitted.
Fee hike will be on lines of industry inflation and it will be in the range of within approximately five to 10 per cent. Intake may increase based on yearly pattern.
Careers360: How have you integrated the evolving industry trends into your curriculum and pedagogy?
Dr. Sheorey: Owing to surge insmart study trend, introduction to various interactive online study platforms like Connect Plus, SmartBook, Tools and Software on Analytics, EuroMonitor, Science Direct and Bloomberg have been introduced to sync our knowledge imparting system with the current trends.
Social media marketing has grown to a very substantial level in the recent years owing to the rise of e-Commerce industry. With the help of various corporate competitions and incorporating specialized subjects on digital marketing we keep our students competent in this area.

Careers360: Do you have an incubation cell or entrepreneurship cell at your B-School? Please share how it functions.
Dr. Sheorey: SCMHRD has an Entrepreneurship Cell that works in collaboration with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE). E-Cell has taken up initiatives like the E-Connect Drive to connect with entrepreneurs across various cities.
Through the initiative we were able to build associations with cross sectorial start-ups and seasoned entrepreneurs for continuous engagement and mentoring of budding entrepreneurs. E-Talks and workshops are organised where students interact with successful entrepreneurs and get a realistic idea of their business models and strategies.
The annual fest conducted by E-Cell of SCMHRD provides a platform to students from all over the country to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and interact with angel investors, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. The fest includes competitions to find the best start-up idea, the best entrepreneur etc. We have also conducted TEDx sessions to help students spark conversation and connect through local TED-like experiences.
Careers360: What are some of the successful start-ups that have come out from your institute’s incubation cell?
Dr. Sheorey: We have a rich legacy of successful start-ups that have come out of the SCMHRD family. Finance Buddha, India’s third largest loan syndication platform; Ressy Technology Private Limited, which is a restaurant discount manager; Jumboking, India’s first and largest chain selling Vadapavs are some of the renowned start-ups among the plethora of ventures that are owned and managed by SCMHRD students and alumni. Apart from these, we have over 300 successful start-ups operating in diverse domains ranging from bloodstock specialisation to online construction retail and e-commerce.
Careers360: What are the key challenges faced by management education today?
Dr. Sheorey: Management education across the globe is facing a unique crisis of relevance in the contemporary scenario. All the aspects of Business education such as quality of MBA aspirants, curriculum, business research, quality of research publications, industry-institute interface, management development programmes, faculty development programmes, placements, compensation packages of B-School graduates, career development trajectory of alumni, diversity among faculty as well as students, governance and accountability, etc. are under critical scanner. B-schools in India are facing multiple issues such as proliferation of B-schools, quality of education, faculty shortage, poor regulatory mechanism and governance and accountability.
