Abhishek Halder shares his IIM Ahmedabad Experience
With this special series, you will be able to have insights about the B-School life, academic routines and activities from the view point of an Alumnus. You will be able to experience the precious days spent on a campus and knowledge gained from the perspective of ex-students.
Abhishek Halder is a proud alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, who pursued his Post Graduate Diploma in Management. A student of batch 2010-12, Abhishek is currently designated as EA to COO in HPCL- Mittal Energy Limited. He shares how he grabbed the opportunity to switch to General Management domain, which appealed to him more as compared to other domains.
He also discusses how even the tiny aspects of management learned during the internships helped him in his job profile. He learned about internal consulting as an intern in a Corporate bank, which is now a vital part of his responsibility in his current profile and company.
Abhishek opted for an MBA programme to accelerate his growth in a manufacturing company, after the completion of which he developed a holistic view of the world around him and achieved his goals.
Read his interview to know more about his academic and non-academic experiences in B-school.
Careers360: Tell us about your domain and your work profile. At professional level, did you pursue the same field you were interested in or you switched your domain as you completed your MBA?
Abhishek: I am currently working in General Management and Operations domain, as EA to COO in HPCL- Mittal Energy Limited. I was equally interested in Finance, but as I gradually completed my MBA programme at IIM- A and learned the strategies and nitty- gritties of Operations, I focused in the same field and grabbed the opportunity which appealed more to me at the time of decision making.
Careers360: Is industry work different from what you learn at B-schools?
Abhishek: Yes, it is. A student learns a lot from his or her practical exposure. Theory teaches you what is to be done, but the implementation process of how it is to be done is taught by practical exposure. Results of my work take the forefront rather than the method of problem solving. It's equally important for a student to concentrate on what is taught in academics by your professors, after all they are experienced and aware of the competition level in the industry.
Careers360: From your experience, please share how did your internship experience support you in your job?
Abhishek:My internship was with a Corporate bank and I was assigned with a task of setting up the system of Corporate banking in small private Indian banks. Function wise that experience was totally different form what I currently pursue. However given that, I work as the EA to COO, bulk of my work is of the nature of internal consulting. It is this respect that the internship experience helped me in my current career path. The exposure and practicals done at internship level somehow supports you in your future prospects. One must concentrate on their internships with a full heart, as you never know which of your present problem has its solution in your training experience.
Careers360: How do you think your MBA programme has added value to your life?
Abhishek: By pursuing an MBA, I developed a holistic view of the world around me; my goals both professional and personal became clear to me. The thought process though changed a bit, but I achieved what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to accelerate my growth in an operations company, and it is what I am currently pursuing.
Careers360: Briefly take us through your life at the campus, both academic and non-academic life.
Abhishek: I enjoyed both the academic and non-academic life at campus: be it the rigorous assignments, class discussions, group work, in-class quizzes, competitions or lazy time spent dreaming about the future, informal group discussions, late nights spent sitting or eating out with friends. Although, I don't miss the B-School time everyday, but there are times I miss all of those activites and late night sessions with my group. Memories are what we are left with in the end, so enjoy your college life to the fullest, experience each day with great spirits, the time won’t come back.
Careers360: You are a proud alumnus of this top B-School. What is the best part from a student perspective?
Abhishek: It’s an honour to be associated with such a great institution- IIM Ahmedabad. Everything was special, unique and important. From a student’s perspective, the professors are such that you are automatically attentive in class and become interested in the subjects being taught, and one will surely miss the lectures.
Careers360: Tell us one of your B-School student life secret, which can be shared with the future aspirants?
Abhishek: Well, I was a very active and an intelligent student. But I did not take equal interest in many subjects and assignments (specially group assignments) and found that I was happy with average scores in these topics at the cost of learning!
Careers360: Any suggestions for your future MBA aspirants.
Abhishek: Whatever anyone suggests, follow your interests, clarify your goal and work towards that, otherwise you will wind up starting from scratch 3-5 years after completing the course.

can I get admission in iim Ahmedabad after bsc agriculture in ananad agriculture University, Gujarat
Yes you can apply for CAT and get admission in IIM Ahmedabad. IIM Ahmedabad is the top Institute for MBA and it's cutoff is very high every year.
Since you are from bsc which is a non engineering background, extra points are given by the Institute for maintaining academic diversity. This is an advantage for you.

Hope this is helpful.
is IIM Ahmedabad offer integrated program of management
Hello there. Hope you are doing good. I would like to tell you that IIM Ahmedabad does not offer integrated program of management. Among all the IIMs, only IIM Indore offers integrated program in BBA + MBA. IPMAT is the entrance exam conducted by IIM Indore for getting admission into its integrated BBA+MBA program.
I hope this solved your query. Good luck for your future.
Sir Im an average student and i want to get admission in IIM Ahmedabad. But i dont have good enough marks in my 10th & 12th. I got 70% in 10th & 76% in 12th. So sir is it possible for me to get admission in IIMA even after getting good percentile for my CAT entrance test.
The admission into IIM Ahmedabad is itself a great victory and let me inform you that there is nothing like the involvement of previous exams, even the students of Engineering undergraduates go for MBA programs in various colleges. So coming to the point, I would like to suggest you that forgetting about your previous marks, which are not much bad, you must focus on the CAT examination because you can get Ahmedabad only if you are under 99 percentile student and yes it's quite difficult to achieve but if you try to work on the the portion of examination then obviously in one year or two you can crack CAT.
Also after cracking the CAT examination it's the interview part which makes sure that you will get admission in IIM Ahmedabad because the interview part is quite tough you need to be rebuilt your personality your speaking skills which are very much simpler important for any candidate who is appearing for the cat interview examination. I hope you understand what my concern is about. All the best!!!

What should I fill in "year of passing" in 12th field in CAT form 2020 if I passed 12th in 2016 and appeared for Improvement in all subjects in 2017 ? Also I have improved my percentage so which marks should I enter? Please Help. Remember I passed all my subjects in 2016.
It is a tricky situation but the answer is simple. You passed the senior secondary exam in the year of 2016 so you should mention 2016 as the year of passing. You are saying that you secured more percentage in improvement, then you can mention the improved grades in the form. But at the time of interviews, you will have to carry both the marksheets . Only The one with the more percentage , shall be considered valid. Which is the improved one in your case.
And lastly, dont worry . This does not affect the admission criteria .As long as you have cracked the entrance exam and proved your caliber for the respective exam, you are pretty much good to go.
