Amtrita School of Business Summer Internship Experience
Amrita School of Business, part of Amrita University, is located at Coimbatore. The institute is situated in 330-acres of land and was established in 2003, with an 'A' by NAAC accrediation.
In this Careers360 special series ‘Internship Experiences’ of B-school students, we bring experience shared by Amrita School of Business student. Jithin George, who did his 2-month long internship with Anchor Electricals Limited, shares how he learned Marketing tactics to attract potential customers, which he theoritically learned during his classes.
Careers360: Where did you completed your summer internship and what was it all about?
Jithin:The company were I completed my summer internship was, Anchor Electricals Pvt Ltd, by Panasonic. My project was “To Understand And Analyze Market For Concept Sales And Brand Awareness Of Panasonic‘s High Efficiency HIT Solar PV In India”. The internship project was based in Kochi.
The purpose was mainly to find out the potential customers for the HIT solar PV module by Panasonic, which is a high efficiency solar module introduced in India on February 2014.
Careers360: What were your expectations about the company and the work culture?
Jithin:When I went to the training, I was expecting to be treated like a student who is not exposed to the industry. But my mentor treated me as a part of his 13 member team. The interns at first were given a two-day training on how were to move ahead with the project and other suggestions about it.
It was a great learning experience. My mentor was someone who is always encouraging and pushing others to their limits and to do better. Even after the training, for the next two months, he was always in contact with me, giving suggestions to any problems I had.
Careers360:How did you started with your project during your internship?
Jithin: I actually got to do and learn things about marketing and how to approach and attract potential customers. I segregated the market into residential, commercial, industries, hospitals and hotels. Among these, more importance was given to industries, hotels and hospitals. This is because the cost of the modules is more than that of its Indian counterparts, by about 25-30%. As such, the return of investment of the modules is better if the installation capacity is more. The maximum installation on a residence will be much less than that on a hotel or hospital. Therefore residential clients were not given much importance. Overall it was Segmentation of the potential clients to make a right pitch of marketing for them.
Careers360: What is you career interest area? Did you get an exposure to that what you are interested in at your internship?
Jithin: I am interested in having a career in Sales and Marketing, especially B2B Sales. Since prospecting and making cold-contact are crucial in Institutional sales, I was curious to see how I would measure up to the task.
In the internship, first an appointment was obtained by means of a call or personally visiting the client. Then a presentation about the product was given to the client if they are interested. In the presentation various details are given like, how much power and cost they can save, the return on investment etc. If the client is interested a site analysis is done on their roof so as to get an idea of how much capacity they can install and how much power they can obtain from the installed modules.
So I got to do a lot of things our Marketing Professors taught us. Like, I never thought I would actually get to do “Consultative Selling” so soon after I learned it in class. But I was practically a Consultant to some of the prospects, helping them to crystallize their needs and wants into tangible and actionable solutions.
Careers360: Did your project had an impact?
Jithin:The main observation from the project was that the Kerala is a good market for Solar panels. But the power tariff is pretty low in the state, which makes the installation of HIT module not an atractive investment. This was valuable info for the Company. Then I managed to source a very good lead from Cochin International Airport Ltd. As they were interested in the project.
I have always heard that “what you learn is not what you get to do”, from many people working in various industries. But for me it was different as I got to do in real what I learned it class. I realized that one needs to be open as opportunities for that, in all likelihood, could come from anywhere. We just need to be ready and eager to catch them!
