Careers360 visited the legendary Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and spent one day in this amazing campus. Before visiting, we were wondering how the environment, facilities, the faculty and students would be. But, most importantly we were worried about how it would be to spend one day.

Here we were, in the blistering heat of Ahmedabad in a grand campus with buzzing second-semester students, with that fresh look of becoming a senior in what is one of the preferred and top IIM- IIM Ahmedabad.

iima2Established in 1961 and architected by Louis Kahn, IIM-A offers two years full-time post-graduate programme in management, along with other executive doctoral programmes. As our campus tour starts, we realized the grandness of this place which can be referred to as a so-called Planet in itself. We have all heard the quality and perseverance of the students from this institute, and we felt the same, as like it was all in the IIM-Air. The activeness, determination, passion, and the excellence, were all felt with our each step.

With curiosity to know what it is that makes this IIM such that student aspires to appear in CAT and take admission here, we started our day as early as possible in the morning.

iima1Day Starts- 7 AM- Beware if you are a sleepaholic!

If you thought cracking CAT with a high percentile and taking admission in IIM Ahmedabad was your biggest challenge. I say, you think again. Starting your day run at 7 first for exercise, then to the mess and later for the classes, you hardly get time for your sleep. And God save you if you are not a morning bird!

People get up at 8, rush to grab a bite if possible, and mostly reach class by the deadline of 08:44:59.

iima6Lecture hammering begins- 8:45 AM

The lecture timings have Zero Error policy, as in; a student is not allowed to enter into the class even if s/he is late by one second. You got to be in the class before time.  Such is a marathon for a WIMWI, an alias for Well Known Institute of Management in West India- The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad.

The class-break- class-break-class Рis a robotic function that happens every day in the morning. And then there is a fight for CP, pass̩ class participation marks. So even if you are sleepy, you have to be attentive.

iima5No full stop even in Lunch- 1 pm

Lectures, case studies and question answer rounds for about three hours; lunch break seems to be a savior, but, only if, the brain stop ticking WORK. During lunch, students frantically check their mails, check quiz boards. And if the hell hasn’t stopped showering its blessings and students have a quiz to be conducted, instead of lunch students start preparing for it. Otherwise, they go back to rooms where most people waste time during next 2-3 hours but few smart ones sleep.

iima7Preparation Time- 5 PM

After completing the average person’s dose of a day’s work within six hours, the part of becoming Hercules starts. Where some starts the next day preparations and completes the assignments, some goes for the less academic endeavours.

The Playground full of athletes and groups of club members chatting is like literarily the Buzz of the campus. And, as usual on the other side, the hostel environment is full of chats, personal activities, discussions and so on.

iima4Fill-up – 8 PM

The Wimwians finally get real time for them where they charge up themselves with good food for the further challenges. The big and loud mess sees dine-out students having faces similar to that of someone walking out of a happy meal drive thru.

iima39 PM Analysis

A good day's work ends after dinner. Nightfall sees a hundred groups huddled together in rooms, grounds, library, apparently all over campus to discuss over the next day submissions. When the Wimwians end their day, they know that every moment of the day has taken him that much closer to being a manager par excellence, to add-on to the IIM-A glory. They Sleep, which they say is something that’s a godsend at IIMA.

Well the A explains the Activeness of the students here. And the life @ Planet IIM A continues with early morning sleep, rush to class, and lots of other stuff. A day spent here is a step towards your managerial dream.

Hi All, I want to apply for IIMs and I have a query regarding EWS certificate. I had applied for EWS but I got it in my regional format (marathi). The college I am applying is not accepting this format. And I am confused of how to apply the format that they want. Does that format has any name ? TIA

Akram Khan 28th Jan, 2020

Hi,

Many institution give the format of the document required in their information brochure or at the official site. So visit the official site of CAT exam. There in the certificate section you will find the format of all the certificate required.

From there download the  EWS certificate. And after proper attestation submit it.

Hope it helps.

I have calls from IIM A,B,C and I am sure I will covert at least one of them. I have a full-time offer from Axtria with in-hand cash 10LPA + other benefits over and above in campus placements. I know its too early to ask without clearing IIM interviews, but which one to choose? IIM/Job?

Vikas gehlot 21st Jan, 2020

The answer depends upon several factors

The first and foremost thing is that if you are interested in management jobs then you should choose IIM but it is not a simple because on one hand you are losing a job and as well as the fee for IIM is very high and you need to take a loan so you have to think on that line also.

The one cases if you are financially very strong and you can find your studies without taking loan then it is best to go for IIM or else if you can get anthem scholarship then it is also good to choose IIM.

In the case when you need to take a loan you need to be prepared that you have to repay the loan and it will take around 2 to 3 years to repay the loan.

The best part in choosing Iim is that you will be going in management jobs and it will guarantee you a safe future.

if you have not explore the field in which you got the job offer then it is also advisable that you explore sometime the field in which you got the job maybe give 2 to 3 years and then try for IIM. Getting into IIM is not an easy job therefore it is recommended that try the best way possible in your interview if you get in then best up on your financial situation you should choose it..

Hi iam having dyslexia, and government hospital certificate for learning disability, can I get pwd (person with disabilities) quota in iim for mba

Harshita Gupta 18th Jan, 2020
Hey,

IIM has given the criteria for PwD under the " Rights of person with Disabilities Act 2006" and according to it, a person must not have disabilities less than 40% , which means disability should be 40% affective.
The categories of disabilities considered under the Act are as follows:
  • Blindness and low vision.
  • Deaf and hard of hearing.
  • locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy.
  • autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness.
And few others. So according to the last point mentioned above, you are eligible and might get admission in pwd category if you meet the requirements of scores and cut-off and if you fulfill the criteria.

hope this helps!

I am a chartered accountant and belonging to non creamy obc layer . what percetile should I get to get a call from iim Ahmedabad

Sampriti Student Expert 17th Jan, 2020
For OBC candidates the minimum overall percentile required in CAT is 75 with the sectional cutoffs being 65 in each section. But you should score 80-85 percentile in order to be on the safer side as IIMs do a very rigorous shortlisting based on the profile, candidate's CAT percentile and extra curricular achievements.

All the very best
